Having been to four secondary schools before I had the good fortune of attending H.G.S. for the Sixth Form, I can say the experience far surpassed all previous schools. I have fond memories of the inspirational staff and the other sixth form students.

►"I always had the suspicion that our placement in the First Forms depended not only on our ages, but on the quality of the results of the 11-plus examinations we took at our junior schools. Of course there would have to be the evening out of numbers so that classes were roughly the same size, but it's interesting that as the 50's gave way to the new educational philosophies of the 60's (which seemed to be embarrassed about selection on merit), those new First forms appeared under the smoke-screen of Celts and Danes etc. I don't think they fooled anyone."

►"If you had other sisters or brothers at HGS, then you went into same House. When you started at the school, you went into one of the four classes: Celts, Danes, Normans and Romans. Which one you went in depended upon your birthdate e.g. if you were born in March, you went into Danes 1. It was however possible to move to another group in year 2."
