2. Peter Davies 1963-70

►Hi Dave,

Just spent a great 2 hours searching through the site. It's true what they say, Your days at school are the best of your life! You just don't know it at the time. Fabulous site. I loved seeing old friends and teachers. Keep it up.

Best wishes.

3. Edward Armstrong 1960-65

►Just found the site and spent a couple of hours browsing. Incredible. Will add a lot I'm sure.  I was in 2b  when 'Pill' as we affectionately knew him (didn't  know why until years later!) lead us with, I think, an impromptu baton/ruler in a heartfelt chorus of 'Il pleut bergere, presse de ...mouton' at his last class with us.

Keep up the good work. Labor ipse voluptas!

4. Geoff Booth 1939-45

►Dear Sheila,

After receiving your message I logged onto the website and was amazed at the wealth of info about people in my dim and distant past. I have photos and anecdotes which I will send for the archives. Despite all the years of experience that have passed I regard my years of tutelage under Messrs Hamilton, Crossland, Collette, Daddy Austin, Storer, Scourfield, Leonard (in that brilliantly striped blazer and white flannels) as being the first and lasting moulding of my young and malleable character. I must not leave out the ladies, Misses Bromley, Prince, Townsend, Shortridge, Harrison et al. The system embodying houses and teams, with discipline and loyalty was in such contrast to the systems of today. Thank you for contacting me Sheila I will be in touch with the photos etc later. Happy Days.

Best Regards

Geoff Booth (1939-45 Holgate)

►Hi Dave
Item of information. 1A 1940-41. On the Form photo you can add my name. That's me Geoff Booth between Alan Rafton and Barry Cooke.

►Dear Geoff,
Lovely to hear from you and thank you for the information.  I do hope you have enjoyed the site. Those far off days are important to so many Hilmians.

7. Harry Parker 1936-40

My name is Harry H. Parker. I won a county minor scholarship to HGS and attended from  1936 to 1940.  I well remember Mr. Jenkinson and all masters and mistresses, and still have my report book and a maths book.  Are these and any other information I can give of interest?
Harry

Dear Harry,
Thank you very much for contacting the site. I am sure that anything you have would be of interest to our audience. Memories are also of great importance. Simply email text items to me or post the paper items to the site. HGS is still held in high regard by so many former pupils.
Best wishes,
Dave McKenzie

►Hello Dave,

I have just braved getting on the internet and have enjoyed surfing the H.G.S. web site. I was at H.G.S. 1942 - 1949 and have many happy memories of my time there. I have some photos which I am happy to have put on the web site.  They include:  Sports, Girl Prefects, Girls' choirs, Staff 1946, Guest House 1948/49 and several Forms.  Please let me know if these are of any use. Many more memories to share if you want them.

►Hi, Dave,
I have recently been in contact with Arthur Gilbert and found out about your website.  It is absolutely fascinating and thank you for doing such hard work to keep it up and running.  You are doing a marvellous job. I wondered if you would please add me to the list of contacts on your website.  I attended HGS from 1961-1966.
Many thanks and best regards,
Joan

10. Christine Jowitt 1960-65

Hi,

I have been visiting the website as both my parents went to Hemsworth Grammar School. I have really enjoyed hearing the stories about old friends and teachers.  We have looked through some of the form photos and have identified my mum - Christine Jowitt - in the following, and so thought it would hopefully fill in some gaps!

Year 60-61 Romans I Third Row Number 4
Year 61-62 2A Third Row Number 4
Year 62-63 3A Second Row Number 8

Thank you very much,
Claire Crossland

Dear Claire,

We’re delighted to hear from you, and thank you so much for the identifications you provided. Dave and I were at the top end of the school in 1961-62, and the way of things then was that we did not know the names of any of the 1st and 2nd-formers unless they were family, or neighbours! That’s why we are so grateful for the help we receive in that respect. Have you had a look at the 1960-61 and 1963-4 Panoramic photos in the Main Index? No doubt your Mum will appear there too.

Please keep in touch with us if you spot anything more to add or correct. We are always very pleased to hear that the site is giving pleasure, and this makes the effort worthwhile.

Sincerely,

Sheila
