"I do have one impression about the youngsters relating to the level of responsibility that they were prepared to take on. Fixture lists; writing to schools to fit up games in a calendar of Saturdays, sometimes mid-week as well; writing magazine editorials; reports of matches and clubs; free writing; making patrol lists for Prefects; organising and fixing of rooms for club activities; collecting shirts for washing; blowing up rugger balls; collecting bus money, counting it, and handing it over to the Staff member who accompanied them. Organising House teams and House meetings when needed. Organisational and management skills were being developed and honed by these opportunities. The Sixth Form was a veritable place to be raided for skill training. Trust and respect for the ability of these young adults played a large part in the development of many pupils. All this was evident well before the onset of targets, skills and so on with the National Curriculum. I know that the teachers I had most contact with set their own targets, kept their own records and made notes on the progress of most of the pupils they taught. It was not laid down from the top, but because the Staff were such a group of professionals they recognised the need to ensure that each child was provided with the best opportunity to be successful in life as far as their own goals were concerned. It has thrilled me to read of the many youngsters who have testified to the value of the school in their lives, so well done to them and the 'regime' that made it possible. I might add that Staff were always around to aid and assist as well as to sort out any minor difficulties. When I went to High Storrs it was quite easy to slot into the running of the establishment there because of the experiences I had at HGS."
