Grammar School Sports Day Results
There was a large crowd at the 20th. annual sports of Hemsworth Grammar School on the school cricket ground on Wednesday. Price House won the Challenge Cup with 683 points, Holgate being second with 642.5, Talbot third with 528.5, and Guest fourth with 480. Harwood (Price) was Senior Victor Ludorum with 47 points and J. Wilson (Holgate) was Senior Victrix Ludorum with 43 points. The Junior Victor Ludorum Cup was won by Birley (Holgate) with 32.5 points and the Junior Victrix Ludorum Cup was won by A. Brammar (Holgate) with 30 points, for the third year in succession. Several new records were established. Mr. R.W. Hamilton (Headmaster) and members of the school staff were officials and the prizes were presented by Mrs. Carleton, wife of Canon E. B. Carleton, Master of Holgate Hospital. Coun. A. Flavell. J.P. C.C., Chairman of the School Governors, presided. Ryhill Silver Prize Band, under the direction of Mr. G. Smith, played selections. After the sports there were art, cookery, and needlework exhibitions; a film display under the direction of Mr. J. D. Hamilton (Art Master), a cricket match between fathers and boys, and a tennis match between mothers and girls.

 

Sports Day 1948
 

On July 21st HGS held its Annual Sports Day and M. Paul Duthel, a French visitor to the school was the Guest of Honour and presented the trophies to the winners of the various events.

The Mile and Half-Mile Cups were presented to Foster (Price) and Massey (Guest) respectively. The Senior Victor and Victrix Ludorum Cups were awarded to Derek Wilkinson and Amy Hepton, whilst Frederick Hanley and Elizabeth Booth received the Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum Cups.

Holgate House gained the Sports Cup with 332 pts. and Talbot House with 302 pts. was the runner-up. A notable achievement in the Senior Boys' High Jump was the breaking of a fifteen years old record of 5' 1½ ins by Jeff Worgan, who cleared 5' 2 ¾ ins.

Our French visitors presented the school with a cup for Standards, which was won by Talbot House with 857 points.

Sports Day 1949
 

On July 20th H.G.S. held its Annual Sports Day and Mrs. F. Wilson, the Guest of Honour, presented the trophies to the winners of the various events. Altogether five new records were set up, the most noteworthy by Foster, who again won the mile in the record time of 4mins. 55.0 secs. The previous mile record was also broken by Lawton who ran second. James won the half-mile cup.
The Senior Victor and Victrix Ludorum Cups were awarded to Sidney Boulton and Amy Hepton respectively, whilst Allen C. and Fay Hollinshead gained the Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum.
Price House won the Sports Cup with a total of 311 points, and Holgate was the runner-up with 262 points.
The Standards Cup was also won by Price House with 741 points; runners-up Talbot 670 points.
We are looking forward to further successes in the Inter-Schools Sports at Huddersfield which take place next term.
The thanks of the Athletic-minded pupils are extended to Miss Woodward, Mr. Leonard and Mr. Walker for their excellent coaching.

Sports Day 1950

The School Sports were held on July 12th and the afternoon proved to be one of the most exciting for several years, the destination of the trophies being in doubt until the closing events in many cases.
The Championship Cup was won by Talbot with 313 points but it was not until the last two events that they overtook Holgate who finished second with 293.5 points. Price gained 187.5 points and Guest 175 points.
The Standards Cup, awarded for the points gained by all members of the House who achieve set standards in the events, was won by Price.
Altogether nine new records were set, up, viz:- Lawton (Mile), Clarke (Sen. 440 yds.). Pearson (Jun. 220 yds. and 440 yds.), Wilkinson (Int. Shot)
M. Moore (Cricket Ball), M. Hawkins (Jun. 80 yds.), J. Taylor (Jun. Hop, Step and Jump) and B. Parker (Int. 150 yds.)
The Senior Victor Ludorum Cup was won by Clarke, who throughout the summer ran consistently well and won the Northern Counties Junior 440 yds. Championship. Wilkinson won the Junior Victor Ludorum.
The Victrix Ludorum Cups were won by E. Booth (Senior) and M. Butterfield (Junior).
Other trophies were won by Talbot (Relay Cup), Swift (Half Mile Cup) and Lawton (Mile Cup).

Sports Day 1951
 

Roy Sault sets the School Mile Record on 16th July 1951. This record of 4 mins. 45 secs. stood for many years. The image below shows Roy with the trophy.
