During the first half of the Summer term, the 1st Rounders IX played only two matches, won one and lost one. The Junior IX also played two, won one and lost one.
Batting is only fair and the team needs to be much more alert, whilst fielding is quite good but more speed and accuracy is necessary.
The team wish to thank Miss Lawton for her coaching and encouragement and also to express their appreciation to Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitches and to Mrs. Cliffe for her much-appreciated refreshments.
J. Duffield.

Rugby Criticisms
For the second time in three years the 1st XV went through the season unbeaten. The weather, however, was so bad that only two games were played in the Spring Term. The total number of matches played was 10, of which 9 were won and 1 drawn.
Pontefract K. S., Away, Won, 20-5
Castleford G. S., Away, Won, 17-8
Sheffield T. C., Home, Won, 27-3
West Leeds G. S., Home, Won, 41-6
Wath G. S. , Home, Won, 12-3
Thorne G. S., Home, Won, 17-14
Castleford G. S., Home, Won, 22-0
Silcoates, Home, Won, 17-7
Wath G. S., Away, Drawn, 3-3
Rothwell G. S., Away, Won, 17-0

The total number of points scored was 193 while 50 were scored against us. The team did extremely well to be unbeaten this season as we had many injuries. However, there were able reserves to take the place of the injured players. The forwards were often up against larger packs and were out-pushed in the set-scrums but in the loose they more than held their own.

The backs this year were extremely good. A combination and understanding was developed which, combined with sound defence, made them formidable opponents.

Colours:
Repeat - Birkin, Wilkinson, Pacy, Ardon, Trueman.
New - Garbett, Turton, Kirkham.
Half - Womersley, Miles, Ventom.

TURTON: A young full-back who tackles well. His handling is good but he must refrain from 'fly-kicking.
KIRKHAM: A fearless wing-threequarter who goes straight for the line. Tackles well.
GARBETT: A very fast centre whose tackling is outstanding. Handling needs care and must feed his wing more.
WILKINSON: An extremely good centre three-quarter whose speed and weight are used to advantage. Vice-Captain.
O'DONNELL: A very promising young player. His swerve, combined with speed makes him a very dangerous wingman. Defends well.
TRUEMAN: An outstanding player. Sells a delightful 'dummy' and tackles well. His service from the scrum is perfect.
ARDRON: A very powerful 'prop'. Invaluable in the loose.
VENTOM: Marks fairly well. A steady player who is always up with the ball.
OLIVER: A tall forward who is useful in the line-out. Must pack lower.
FOSTER: A fast second row forward who follows up well. Jumping good in the line-out.
WOMERSLEY: A forward who is very speedy but must learn not to be selfish.
PACY: With Ardron, the outstanding forward. Though comparatively short his jumping in the line-out is an example to the side. Dribbles excellently and is a powerful tackler.
DWYER: A big forward who must learn to use his weight. Is inclined to hang round the loose. Can take the place of a three-quarter in an emergency very well.
MILES: Originally a centre three-quarter who has played well at loose forward. Uses his speed to advantage.
J.D. Birkin
BIRKIN: This year's Captain who by encouragement and example has set a very high standard for the side. He is an elusive stand-off half whose skill has contributed to our success.
W.J. Leonard

Athletics and Sports Day

Although, due to the snow, the annual cross country run had to be cancelled, the other events were held as usual. The highlight of the year, is, of course, Sports Day. Last year, there was a very high standard of competition and four records were broken, one by Amy Hepton, one by Wilkinson and two by Mary Griffiths in the Girls' High Jump. She added a further 3.25 inches to the previous record of 4 ft. 6 ins.
The boys' Senior Victor Ludorum was won by Wilkinson, D., and the junior counterpart by Brockhurst, D. On the girls' side, Mary Griffiths gained the Senior Trophy and Amy Hepton the Junior. The champion house was Price, with Holgate a close second.
During the summer holidays a senior relay team competed at Castleford where they won a valuable silver cup.
On the 21st of May this year, the school sent an Athletics team to the Huddersfield Inter-School Sports, held for the first time since 1938. The team did exceptionally well and obtained 15 places. The senior girls were awarded a Certificate for the most points scored, as were the senior boys. The boys combined team, Junior, Middles and Seniors came out champions and achieved the distinction of winning the Shield. The girls had hard luck, failing by one point to emulate the boys' feat.
Wilkinson, D. Holgate.

The 1947 Sports Day was held on July 23rd. On the whole the weather was kind, only sending a five-minute shower at about 4.30 pm. Once again the standard of competitors was very high, resulting in some really keen duels. Nine new records were established, two by Atkinson R. who ran magnificently to break the long-standing 100 yards record and also the 220 yards; two by Wilkinson D. in the Javelin and the Shot, and one each by Miles D., Senior Hurdles, Clark G., Senior High Jump, and M. Stringer, Intermediate 100 yards. In addition Guest won the Intermediate Relay, and Price the Senior Relay, both in new record times.

When the final results were added up, Guest became the new holders of the Sports Cup and the Relay Cup. Runners-up for the former was Price, with Holgate a close third.

In the individual placings A. Hepton won the Senior Victrix Ludorum and Wilkinson D. the Senior Victor Ludorum. Runners-up were S. Whitehouse and Miles D. The Junior counterparts were awarded to A. Lockwood and Warden J., with H. Ryalls and Clark G. as runners-up.

Later in the year the School sent a Senior Relay team to Castleford Sports where they won easily, thus retaining the Challenge Cup for the second year in succession.

A Junior Relay team competed at Brodsworth and were placed second. This year at the Northern Public Schools' Championships held at Manchester, Wilkinson D., competing against the cream of the northern schools, was placed second in the Javelin (164' 10") and 3rd in the shot (41' 4"). [The excellence of his performance is shown by the fact that his Shot Put beat the previous record by 2' 4" (W.J.L.)]
Wilkinson D.D. U6A.

Hockey

GOAL: M. Jefferson.
Usually shows good anticipation but must learn to use both her feet.
R. BACK: B. Dracup.
Tackles well but is rather slow on to the ball. Good strong drive which should be used more in distributing the ball.
L. BACK: B. Laughton.
A promising newcomer in the defence line. Backs up well and recovers quickly.
R. HALF: S. Whitehouse.
Rather slow on to the ball but is tenacious and tackles well.
C. HALF: A. Hepton.
Reliable player who anticipates well and feeds the forwards excellently. Must learn to keep to the centre and not wander to the wings. (I.S.)
L. HALF: I. Smart.
Tackles and distributes the ball well. A most helpful vice-captain during the Autumn term and captain during the Spring term. (D.L.)
R. WING: M. Roberts.
Speedy and centres well near circle. Tends to stray too far away from her defences and must tackle back more.
R. INNER: A. Whitfield.
Energetic player but should use more direction in the field and steady herself before shooting.
C. FORWARD: M. Griffiths.
An excellent and inspiring captain during the Winter term. Is speedy and accurate with a powerful drive.
L. INNER: G. Griffiths.
Has the makings of an excellent forward. Is reliable and steady but needs more confidence and dash in the circle.
L. WING: J. Duffield.
Excellent stickwork and speed helps her to tackle a difficult position well. Must try to centre sooner and to run straight down the wing, and not run diagonally.

Once again the 1st XI has retained the usual high standard on the hockey field. Out of the seven matches played only one was lost. Repeat Full Colours were awarded to L Smart - Full Colours to A. Hepton-Half Colours to G. Griffiths, J. Duffield and M. Roberts.

The team played well in all matches but the forward line must gain more confidence in the circle, and the defence must be more persistent in following up.
The Second XI played three matches.

In spite of the terrible weather every one retained her keenness and both practices and matches went off well. Miss Shaw played a great part in the successes we gained and later Miss Lawton continued with our coaching - unfortunately the weather prevented our showing the results.

We should like to thank Mrs. Cliffe and her staff for the excellent refreshments, Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitches, and all others who have shown interest in the teams.
I. Smart. U6a Price, Captain

Netball

In the Autumn Term 1946, a 1st School Netball team was formed, but unfortuately, due to the weather, all of the matches except one had to be cancelled. In the match we did play, however, we gained a decisive victory over Pontefract Girls' High School, the score being 10-2.
We hope that our next year's team will have more favourable weather and that they will build up a tradition for future years.
Finally we should like to express our heartiest thanks to Miss Robinson for the formation and coaching of the team.
Rita Taylor, Captain
Barbara Harwood, Vice.Captain.

Front Row L-R: 1, 2, 3, J.D. Birkin, George Pacy, Derek Wilkinson, 7

This year we have a very fine team which is well balanced. The batting is extremely strong, the bowling good enough to hold its own and the fielding of a high standard. Up to the time of writing the team is unbeaten and there is every prospect of a good season.

ATKINSON: An extremely good opening bat with a variety of strokes but must learn not to pull good length balls. A fine stumper.
PACY: With confidence will be quite a good bat but must learn to use his feet. Also a medium paced bowler who is likely to take many wickets this season.
MILES: A very good spin bowler. His batting is below expectations mainly due to lack of confidence. Fields well in the slips.
RAINFORTH: A newcomer who is quite promising. An excellent 'point' fielder.
HART: A batsman with a good defence. Must develop scoring strokes and take care with his fielding.
TRUEMAN: Bats quite well but must stop 'poking' on the off. A change bowler who must bowl a length.
WILKINSON: A hitter who should learn how to play the 'Yorker'. Excellent fielder.
STREET: A promising young medium paced bowler. He should try not to bowl short. Fielding needs practice.
FRY: Another hitter who, however, can defend quite well. Fielding good.
FOSTER: A steady batsman useful in the lower end of the batting order. Keen fielder.
J. D. Birkin
BIRKIN: This year's Captain. A very sound player who is equally expert in batting, bowling and fielding.
W. J. Leonard

On behalf of the team I should like to thank the staff for the interest taken in the team, especially: Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Leonard, Mr. Manning, Mr. Oaks and Mr. Hamilton,
Our thanks are also due to Mrs. Cliffe for the teas she has provided and to Mr. Rhodes for the good pitches he has provided from a disappointing field.
J.D. Birkin

Miss. Taylor from Pontefract Girls' High School came to judge the competition and we found her friendly, enthusiastic and very helpful.
We should very much like to thank Miss Lawton for her valuable coaching.
