Huddersfield Sports 1950
The school team was again highly successful at the Inter-School Sports. The combined Boys' Team carried off the W.R.C.C. shield and the Senior boys won the plaque for their section. Excellent support for the seniors was given by the intermediate and junior boys and their performances promise well for the future.

The girls did not shine and they seem to be going through a lean period as far as athletics are concerned. It was noticeable, however, that compared with the other schools, they were not lacking in enthusiasm.

Full Athletics colors are awarded to Clarke, Allen and Henry.

Hockey First XI

Back Row L-R: 1, 2, Mr. Hamilton, Miss. Woodward, Irene Wright, 6
Front Row L-R: 1, 2, 3, 4, P. Commons, 6, Pamela Harrison

Last season the 1st XI played 17 matches, 9 of which were won, 2 drawn and 6 lost.
Full colours were awarded to Florence Crossley, P. Commons, Eileen Booth, J. Dillon and Pamela Harrison. Half colours to Rita Pickles and Irene Wright.

First Eleven team members wore red sashes on their gymslips instead of the usual navy belt and 2nd eleven wore bright blue sashes. I can remember getting my red sash in my Fifth year. In year Four I had been Junior Hockey Captain.
Irene Wright

The 2nd XI played 11 matches, 5 of which were won, 1 drawn and 5 lost.

All the members of the teams would like to thank Miss. Woodward for her advice and encouragement, Mrs. Cliffe and her staff for the refreshments they provided for us and Mr. Rhodes for the excellent care of the pitches.

Summary of year's work

Goalkeeper - P. COMMONS - A very reliable goalkeeper who clears well with her feet, but is inclined to give "sticks."

Right Back - IRENE WRIGHT - Clears well and has a strong drive. Tackling has improved but more speed is needed in getting back into tackle again,

Left Back - DOREEN WORSFOLD - Clears well but tackling could be much better. Tends to take over half position.

Right Half - RITA PICKLES - Rather slow at times and inclined to hit the ball without stopping it, but tackles well.

Centre Half - FLORENCE CROSSLEY - A most helpful Vice-Captain. Has a strong drive and distributes the ball well. A very reliable defender.

Left Half - J. DILLON - Improved as the season progressed. Tackles persistently, but clearing could be better.

Right Wing - EILEEN BOOTH - A most efficient wing whose centre passing and shooting are very good.

Right Inner - D. PICKIN - Combines well with her wing but is inclined to hang back too much in the circle.

Centre Forward - D. JOHNSON - Needs speed and accuracy in passing but has developed a quick shot.

Left Inner - THELMA BETTS - Has tried hard and her play has improved considerably, especially in the circle.

Pamela Harrison, 5B (Captain)

Left Wing - PAMELA HARRISON - An excellent captain who changed to this difficult position on the field at the beginning of the season and has worked hard to develop a good, quick centre pass, and an effective shot at goal from the left.
B. J. Woodward

Although I think we all enjoyed competing against other Schools, our season was not a very successful one. Of the six matches the 1st team played, one was won, one drawn and the rest were lost. The 2nd teams results were similar.

The first team's failure was not due to the fielding but to the weak batting. The results might have been worse without Jean Thompson (Captain), who was a good bowler, and Ellen Gell who played a fine 3rd Deep. Both of them received their colours last season.

With more concentration on the batting side and more varied bowling this coming season, I think our School will earn a good name for Rounders.

I would like to extend the teams' thanks to Miss Woodward, our coach, also to Mrs. Cliffe and her helpers for the teas they provided and to Mr. Rhodes for his work on the pitches.
B. Winters, L6A.

Tennis

As the School Magazine is being printed rather earlier this year, there does not seem to be very much for me to say, because the Tennis season does not begin until next term after the Easter holiday. There are only two members of last year's 1st and 2nd VI's still at school, besides the Reserves, and some hard practice will have to be put in by this year's teams.
The Juniors and many of the Seniors get very little opportunity to play because we have only two courts for roughly 300 girls. Usually, unless the Seniors are members of Tennis Clubs outside school, they do not get sufficient practice to take the game seriously enough to be in the teams.
Although the prospect for the coming season is not perhaps as bright as it might be, I think that with plenty of practice we should have some good matches and be quite successful.
Margaret E. Kendall, U6A (Captain)

From the School Magazine of 1951
At the beginning of last season only two players remained out of the two Tennis VIs. Therefore, ten new players had to be chosen, and taking this into consideration, we did not suffer as many defeats as we expected. Out of the eight games played we won 4 and lost 4. Bad weather at the beginning of term prevented other matches. In the match between the Staff and School, the Staff won by one game; and on Sports Day the School lost to the Parents, who turned out a good team.
Repeat Colours were awarded to Margaret Kendall (Captain) who always played a good game, and colours were awarded to Eileen Booth and Dorothy Pickin. As most of last year's team are still with us, here's hoping that next season we will do better.
All the team would like to thank Miss. Wimpenny, Miss. Jacks and Miss. Woodward for their help and advice.
B. D. Pickin L6A

The School Sports were held on July 12th and the afternoon proved to be one of the most exciting for several years, the destination of the trophies being in doubt until the closing events in many cases.
The Championship Cup was won by Talbot with 313 points but it was not until the last two events that they overtook Holgate who finished second with 293.5 points. Price gained 187.5 points and Guest 175 points.
The Standards Cup, awarded for the points gained by all members of the House who achieve set standards in the events, was won by Price.
Altogether nine new records were set, up, viz:- Lawton (Mile), Clarke (Sen. 440 yds.). Pearson (Jun. 220 yds. and 440 yds.), Wilkinson (Int. Shot)
M. Moore (Cricket Ball), M. Hawkins (Jun. 80 yds.), J. Taylor (Jun. Hop, Step and Jump) and B. Parker (Int. 150 yds.)
The Senior Victor Ludorum Cup was won by Clarke, who throughout the summer ran consistently well and won the Northern Counties Junior 440 yds. Championship. Wilkinson won the Junior Victor Ludorum.
The Victrix Ludorum Cups were won by E. Booth (Senior) and M. Butterfield (Junior).
Other trophies were won by Talbot (Relay Cup), Swift (Half Mile Cup) and Lawton (Mile Cup).
Henry, P. G., U6S.

Cricket

Season 1950 was a very successful one for the 1st XI. A satisfactory feature of the team was the number of young players - Stead, Cook, Chappel and Jagger - who fully merited their selection as regular members of the 1st XI. The team's all-round efficiency is indicated by the results - played 11 won 6, drew 3 and lost 2.

The fielding always reached a high standard but improvement is still needed on the part of individuals. Milner and Schofield scored 226 and 254 runs respectively while Bruce took 25 wickets at an average of 5.92.

During the season an experiment was carried out with an attacking leg-side field to the off-spinners of Bruce. The effect of this method of attack is a controversial issue but the results indicate that it was a success. Fielding in these "silly" positions was excellent with Schofield and Lawton outstanding.

The team would like to thank Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Leonard, Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Allan. Mrs. Cliffe's teas were of her regular high standard. Mr. Rhodes, as well as working wonders with a disappointing square took a keen interest in the individual players.

With ten of last year's team still at School the prospects for the coming season (1951) are very bright. Our search for young players still continues and the enthusiasm of the Colts augurs well for the future. The atmosphere of friendliness on the cricket square makes it a pleasure and a privilege to captain this team.
R. J. Whittaker, U6A, Captain.

CLARK, D. G: An opening batsman who enjoyed a very successful season in 1950. Although favoured by prolific good fortune, he commands many good scoring strokes. His fielding could be improved, particularly his picking up and returning of the ball. Full Colours.

CHAPPEL, K.: A young opening batsman who is very powerful on the leg-side. He is inclined to lift his head and bat to the rising ball. A capable fielder but should try to quicken up.

MILNER, B.: A brilliant forcing bat with beautiful strokes all round the wicket. His worst fault is "hitting over" the long half-volley. Fast left arm bowler who must learn that length and direction are more important than speed. A very fine "behind the wicket" fielder. Treasurer. Repeat Full Colours.

SCHOFIELD, P.: Vice-captain. One of the most capable cricketers the school has had for many years. At the wicket his attack is ferocious while his defence off the back foot is impregnable. A medium pace bowler who always attacks the wicket. An outstanding fielder. He is a fine example to all young cricket aspirants in the School. Full Colours.

JAGGER, P. A.: A very capable all-rounder. Equally adept at all departments of the game. Unfortunately, he has previously lacked the stamina necessary for a sustained effort. He should have a bright future. Full Colours.

COOK, R. An able young left hand bat, one who would do well to develop his shots in front of the wicket. Fielding needs practice. A left-arm spin bowler of some promise.

STEAD, J. R.: Young all-rounder who unfortunately had not much opportunity to show his undoubted ability. He should be a power in future teams.

DYKES, G: Stylish batsman. He has all the strokes but does not put enough "punch" into them. Capable medium paced bowler but should curb his impulse to bowl too quickly. Very fine slip fielder.

LAWTON, B.: An able all-rounder. Defensive left hand bat and a right arm leg break bowler. A very good "silly" fielder.

BRUCE, E: Last year's secretary. An extremely accurate slow-medium off break bowler. He is persistent and makes the ball turn and lift. Should try to develop the one that goes the "other way." Very safe field with an accurate and long throw. He does not appreciate his own batting ability.
Full Colours
R. J. Whittaker, U6A. Captain.

WHITTAKER R. J.: This years captain. He has played very well indeed as wicket keeper. An ideal position for the "skipper." He is inclined to favour an unorthodox attack which, although often effective, must not be over-worked. He must be congratulated on his handling of a very successful team.
W. J. Leonard

2nd Team Colours, awarded to any player making at least one appearance with the 1st XI were awarded to Chappel, Dykes. Lawton, Stead, Perry, Frost, O'Marr, Fozzard and Henry.

Netball

I regret that this season - at least as a netball season - has been extremely unsuccessful, both teams having lost all their matches. However, we do feel that netball is, at last, beginning to obtain a small niche at Hemsworth and we hope that time will give us a netball tradition.

We have enjoyed our matches, in spite of the elusiveness of successful results, and I should like to thank Miss Woodward, Miss Wimpenny and Mrs. Copley for the interest they have shown.

I should also like to extend our thanks to Mrs. Cliffe and the maids for the teas provided so efficiently.
Gladys Alderman U6A (Captain)

Ilkley Sevens Rugby

During the Easter holidays, a team consisting of Perry, Askey, Henry, Whittaker, Fozzard, Beckett, and Ramsden, went to Ilkley to represent the School in a Seven - a - Side Tournament. 26 schools were competing but the team gained distinction in this strenuous type of rugby by reaching the final where they were beaten 6-3 by Acklam Hall Grammar School. It was a very pleasant day's sport and next year's team should look forward to paying another visit to Ilkley.
Perry J.D. U6S.

Cross-Country

Talbot House, for the fourth successive year, has won the Cross Country Run. This year, however, the Senior and Junior representations were almost equal and there were plenty of entrants in both the Senior and Junior events. It is interesting to note this year that the Seniors are not lacking in enthusiasm and indeed are setting a good example to the Juniors. Talbot House again obtained the first three places in the Senior Event - Lawton(1), Whittaker(2), Fozzard(3), and 1st and 3rd places in the Junior Event - Baker(1), Swift(2), and Chesterton(3).

Final Placings:-
Senior Event Junior Event
1. Talbot 107 points 1. Talbot 126 points
2. Guest 46 points 2. Guest 85 points
3. Holgate 35 points 3. Price 50 points
4. Price 17 points 4. Holgate 27 points.

Fozzard J.C. U6A Talbot.

Rugby

Once again the 1st XV has this season produced rugby of a standard expected of Hemsworth Grammar School. The team has had a very successful season being undefeated at home and only losing three matches away to Thorne, Pontefract and Goole. In the annual fixture with a strong Old Boys' Team a large number of spectators saw a six points draw.

With only six members of last year's first team present it was obvious that the team could not function on individual brilliance. As a result, a team was built up throughout the season consisting of some members who had not even played in the second XV of the previous season. On the field, however, it produced devastating team work both in attack and defence and between forwards and backs. Much credit for this achievement must be given to Messrs. Leonard, Lloyd, Allan and Swinbank.
For the statistically minded, 15 matches were won, 1 drawn and 3 lost.

The 2nd XV also had a successful season, winning 14 and losing 2.

The Colts XV produced some good rugby throughout the season and several good players have developed. 9 matches were won and 4 lost.

Although the Junior XV lost more matches than they won in their first year, the scheme of coaching them young should pay big dividends later. It is to be hoped that many of the Junior boys will show a great interest in this team. 3 matches were won, 4 lost and 1 drawn.

Thanks from all the teams are extended to Mr. Rhodes for marking the pitches and to Mrs. Cliffe for providing the teas throughout the season.

Individual Criticisms
MILNER B. - A very sound full-back with a safe tackle and an amazingly long kick which he uses to advantage. His main fault is that he is too often tackled in
possession of the ball.

JACK ROBINSON - A fast wing three-quarter who is equally adept at going for the corner or cutting inside and giving a reverse pass. Tackles well.

BRUCE K. - A very good defensive three-quarter but should try to be more thrustful in attack. An excellent secretary.

PETER G. HENRY - A very fast centre with a startling turn of speed which splits open the opposing defence. He is also an excellent touch-finder but his tackling could
improve still more.

SCHOFIELD P. - A brilliant wing three-quarter whose combination with Henry has been one of the highlights of the team. In defence he is a deadly tackler and has a
safe kick for touch.

ASKEY A. - An excellent stand-off half. In attack he opens wide gaps in the opposing defence with his deceptive dummy, though he occasionally spoils it by holding on a little too long. His kicks both in attack and defence are used to advantage and he is a most deadly tackler. Vice-captain.

DICK WHITTAKER - A fearless scrum-half with a very long service from the scrums. His main fault is that he too often doubles back into the ruck of forwards. Treasurer.

LITTLEBOY W.E. - A tall forward around whom the line-out play is built. Invaluable though he is in the line-out, he should work harder in the loose.

HUGHES J.E. - A strong forward with a tremendous amount of spirit and Welsh fire. His ability to get the ball from both the line-out and loose bewilders both his opponents and his own scrum-half.

RAMSDEN D. - A second-row forward who uses his weight to great advantage both in the set scrums and loose.

BECKETT C. - A very hard-working forward who is always with the ball and is a deadly tackler.

DYKES G. - A loose-forward who is very fast round the scrum. He specialises in controlling the ball with his feet. A good tackler.

FOZZARD J. - This year's lock-forward who is always prominent in the loose and catches and distributes the ball well in the line-out.

DUNN BIRCH H. - Another hard-working forward who is continuously up with the ball. Very good both at dribbling and at heeling the ball in the loose.

LAWTON B. - A loose-forward with plenty of 'go'. Tends to play in the five-eighths position. Particularly good at fielding and kicking the ball.
Duncan Perry U6S Captain.

DUNCAN PERRY - Perry, this year's captain, has proved a most effective leader of a very strong side. Playing hooker, his work in the scrum and the loose has been an inspiring example to the rest of the team. Always up on the ball, he continually encourages his team to do likewise.
W. J. Leonard
