This is the HGS athletics team which competed at the inter-schools sports at Huddersfield in 1951. I've named these from memory and I wasn't even involved so surely someone out there can complete the list.

Front Row L-R: 1, Jean Kenchington, Pamela Harrison, Florence Crossley, Brenda Parker, Shirley Lillford, 7
Last season the 1st XI played 13 matches, 4 of which were won, 3 drawn and 6 lost. The 2nd XI played 9 matches, 1 of which was won, 1 drawn and 7 lost. At the end of the season, Repeat Full Colours were awarded to Pamela Harrison and Florence Crossley and Full Colours to Irene Wright, Dorothy Pickin and Margaret Roberts.
COLOURS - These were strips of material like the blazer badges, which were sewn onto your gymslip. They had Hockey on but I can't remember if they said half or full colours. Irene Wright
The not-so-successful season is, I believe due to the many changes in the teams because of illness. However, the 1st XI play an exceptionally good game and combine very well as a team and so we look forward to more success next season.
During the season the teams provided their own refreshments and in this
way managed to cut down expenses and so buy white shirts for the 1st XI.
Goalkeeper: ANN GREETHAM - a steady player whose kicking and clearing has improved during the season.
Right Back: IRENE WRIGHT - a most reliable back with an excellent drive. Her tackling improved as the season progressed.
Left Back: EILEEN TATE - clears well but must remember to stop the ball before hitting. She needs more confidence when tackling.
Right Half: SHIRLEY LILLFORD - has shown herself worthy of a position in the team. She tackles and clears well but she must not use "reverse sticks" so much.
Centre Hall: FLORENCE CROSSLEY - an excellent captain whose speed, good stickwork and accurate passing also make her a most reliable member of the team. B.Woodward
Left Half: JEAN DILLON - a steady player who tackles persistently but whose clearing could be much better.
Right Wing: BRENDA PARKER - a speedy wing who makes a good centre pass but she should press more in the circle.
Right Inner: DOROTHY PICKIN - a good inner who combines well with the wing and has a good centre pass.
Centre Forward: JEAN KENCHINGTON - has adapted herself well to the position and has developed a quick shot.
Left Inner: MARGARET ROBERTS - an inner who passes well to both wing and centre. She has done some good work in the circle.
Left Wing: PAMELA HARRISON - a speedy and efficient wing who passes well into the centre and has a quick shot. (Vice-captain).
On behalf of the teams and myself I would like to thank Miss. Woodward for the great help, encouragement and advice she has given us. I should also like to extend our thanks to Mr. Rhodes for his excellent care of the pitches.
Florence Crossley (L6A) Captain.
Netball
At last, a little more interest is being shown in Netball in the School and more encouragement is being given to the teams. There are now three teams and although members of the second team have not had many matches this season, they have turned out willingly to the practices and also as reserves for the first team.
Certain members of the school who have taken the netball results as a source of amusement in the past have had to change their ideas. Many of the matches, especially during the Christmas term, had to be cancelled owing to the weather but the results of the matches played were quite good, the 1st VII winning 8 and losing 2. The Juniors have not been so successful although they have put up a good show each time. Colours this year have been awarded to Angela Lockwood, June Defty and Patricia Waring.
Last term the 1st team played the staff and succeeded, of course, in beating them. We hope to do this again at the end of this term.
All the teams would like to join me in thanking Miss Wimpenny and Miss Saville who have turned out unfailingly twice a week, when the weather permitted. If it had not been for their excellent coaching and encouragement the teams would not have made such good progress. Our thanks also to Mr. Rhodes, for keeping the courts in order, to members of the team who have swept them free of rain, snow, etc., and also to the members who have sacrificed some of their extra sleep on Saturday mornings to help with refreshments.
A. BOOTH G.S.
Ann is a bit erratic but usually shoots well. She always tries hard.
M MOORE A. Usually Marina shoots fairly accurately but she must concentrate more.
J. DEFTY A.C Her passing is good and she combines well with the centre players but must be a little quicker.
J. SUGDEN D.C. June is gradually improving and with further practice should develop a fairly good style. She must be more accurate.
A. LOCKWOOD D. Helpful Vice-captain and a keen player. She always plays well and is ready to step in at any crisis.
P. KNAPPER G.K. Pat is a good defence and combines well with Angela (D) but she must watch her opponent more. (P. E. Waring).
P. WARING Her footwork is good and passing accurate; these combined with an excellent spirit of leadership, make her a very efficient, as well as enthusiastic, Captain. (K. Wimpenny).
P. E. Waring, L6A. Captain.
Girls' Gym Competition
The Annual Girls' Gym Competition was held on March 7th this year. The Juniors competed in the morning and the Seniors in the afternoon. The adjudicator was Miss Telford of Thorne Grammar School. The winners of the Junior Competition were la and lb. Miss Telford was greatly impressed by their quickness and neatness, good landings and footwork. 3a and b were close runners up with 82 points. Miss Telford re-marked that their landings were good and that balance in these forms was excellent. However, she said that 2a and 2b were rather stodgy.
The best performance of the Seniors was given by the 6th Form, whose footwork, landings and finishings were good. To the rest of the Seniors Miss Telford said that their work was generally good but their landings were rather heavy.
The day went with a swing and was enjoyed by both Senior and Junior girls. A bouquet was presented to Miss Telford and we hope she enjoyed her day with us.
Florence Crossley, L6A.
Rugby Notes
Photo from Geoff Dykes. Thank you, Geoff.
Back Row L-R: 1, 2, Sale, Mr Hamilton, Mr Leonard, Beckett, Ramsden, 8
Middle Row L-R: Manning, Whitaker, Bruce, Schofield, Peter Henry, Milner, 7
Front Row L-R: 1, Clarke, Dykes, North
Milner B: A very strong full back whose tackling has improved greatly. His kicking is excellent and he is very adept at joining in with the "three quarters" - but when doing this he should be careful not to find himself caught out of position.
Booth H: Booth is the youngest member of the side and has adapted himself well to his wing position. In attack he is very good, but his defensive play tends to be rather erratic.
Bruce K: A good, sound, conscientious player. His all-round ability has improved greatly. His stride is very deceptive and he uses it to good advantage in attack. In defence his cover tackling is outstanding.
Sale E: Sale, playing in the centre, has proved himself an ideal tactical player. He is a very strong runner and gives excellent reverse passes inside, which often prove fruitful. He tackles low and hard, but he tends to hold the ball a little too long at times. A very good Secretary.
Henry P.G.: Playing either on the wing or in the centre his very strong running over short distances often makes a gap in the opposing defence. His kicking for touch is very good but his main fault still is his tackling - he tends to go too high.
Stead J.R.: It is said that without a good outside half a Rugby team is not up to standard - in Stead the 1st XV have a brilliant footballer. In both defence and attack he is an ideal player to build a team round.
Whittaker R.J.: A scrum half who does his job effectively - his service from the set and loose scrums is fast and accurate. In defence he is outstanding - dropping on any loose ball in his own fearless manner. He kicks for touch well.
Hughes J.E.: A good prop forward whose play in the loose and in the line-out is outstanding. He must learn not to play the ball when in an off-side position.
Manning G.C.: As a hooker he has done amazingly well to overcome the handicap of being rather tall - unusual in such a position - and has given the team good service from the set scrums. He is always well up with play in the loose.
Clarke I.G.: He is a very good prop forward who pushes well in the
set scrums. His work in the line-out is outstanding.
Ramsden D.: A second row forward who uses his weight to good advantage. He has plenty of spirit and sets a very good example to his colleagues.
Gorton R.: A second row forward who left us in mid-season. He works very hard in the loose and tackles well, but he must learn to play the ball immediately when tackled in possession
Bruce R.: He has filled Gorton's position with apparent ease, and, with a little more experience, he should do very well.
Dykes G.: As a loose forward Dykes is excellent. He is very smart round the scrum and often smothers the opposing scrum half - but he should concentrate a little more on shoving rather than being half down ready to break quickly.
Beckett C.: A terrifically hard tackler whose constant tackling has been one of the outstanding features of the season. As scrum leader he has been an inspiring example to his team-mates.
Eyre C.: A very good all-round player. He pushes well and breaks very quickly. Playing as loose forward he uses his speed to join in with the "three quarters." His tackling is very good.
P. Schofield, L6S.
Schofield P.: This year's captain, an inspiring leader and an excellent wing threequarter. Injuries kept him out of more than half the games but we anticipate a more fortunate season for him next year when his skill and experience should be of the greatest value to the team.
W.J.L.
With over three-quarters of the 1950-51 season gone the 1st XV have sustained their brilliant form by only being beaten once in the 15 games played. Even in this game, which was played at Wath, the margin between the scores was down to 3 points. Team work again has been the foundation of our success.
Throughout the season the standard of play has been very high indeed, with one exception; the place kicking has been very disappointing. As regards coaching, much credit must go to Mr. Leonard, Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Swinbank, Mr. Allan, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Senior, for the time they have spent on the field.
The 1st and Colts' XV's spent an enjoyable day at Bridlington on Feb. 24th, where both teams were successful, the 1st XV winning 13-3 and the Colts 17-0. The 2nd XV are also having a very good season having won 6 of the 10 games played.
Although their play has been of a very high standard the Colts are having a very poor season, winning only 2 of the 14 games played, this being mainly due to the fact that the team is very young. We shall have the advantage of eight of the team in next season's Colts XV. Despite size and age they always endeavoured to play sound football and as long as this continues we will be perfectly satisfied with their performances.
The Junior XV seem to revel in the fact that more fixtures have been arranged for them. These smaller exponents of the game have done their work really well. This season they have won 7 of their 9 matches played.
All members of the teams wish to thank Mr. Rhodes for his work on the field, Mrs Cliffe for providing the meals and Mr. S. Bingley for providing the 'buses for all away matches.

Back Row L-R: Mr. Leonard, Dennis Ramsden, Geoff Dykes, Bernard Milner, Mr Swinbank Front Row L-R: Keith Bruce, Dick Whitaker, Schofield, Eric Sale, 5 On the 27th March a 7-a-side team consisting of Whittaker, Stead, Sale, Bruce, Ramsden, Henry and Schofield visited Ilkley to take part in the tournament. In the first game we were successful in heating Ermystead G.S., Skipton by 18-0 but were not so successful in the 2nd round, being beaten 14-11 in a very exciting game with Bradford G.S. The winners of the tournament were Heath G.S.; Halifax and Wakefield were runners-up. The members of the team would like to thank Mr. Swinbank for the amount of work he has put in, arranging practices. Perry, last year's captain, was presented with an illuminated scroll, the reward of our success in last season's competition, when we were runners-up. P. Schofield, L6S. | |
| R. J. Whittaker | |
| We would like to congratulate Whittaker on the outstanding play which earned him his place in the Yorkshire Schoolboy's XV as scrum half against Durham. This is the first time for many seasons that we have had a player selected to represent his county. W.J.L. | |
