| The photo is of the 1st XV was sent in by Jacqueline Leonard. Thank you, Jacqueline. The names have been provided by Peter Fisher. Thank you, Peter. Back Row L-R: Alan Ousley, Dave Whitehead, Sam (Brian) Hughes, Mr. Leonard, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Senior, Brian Secker, Mick Fry, Arthur Warden Middle Row L-R: Chuck Allen, James Stead, Bernard Milner, Peter Schofield, Keith Bruce, Eric Sale, Geoff Manning Front Row L-R: Terry O'Marr, Peter Fisher Overcoming very poor conditions at times and nearly always playing good open football, the 1st XV, despite being handicapped by injuries, have had a very successful season. Much credit for this success must go to the backs and to the close marking of their opponents by all members of the team. Poor weather conditions resulting in hard grounds have caused a dozen or more matches to be cancelled, particularly for the 2nd XV and Junior XV. The 2nd XV have not shown the co-ordination expected of a team and this is reflected in their results. The Colts and Junior XVs have shown greater enthusiasm and have had more success than they had last year. These young players are our 1st XV's in the making and we feel sure that the School's Rugger reputation and great tradition will be in safe hands. We would like to thank all memhers of the staff who have given up so much time to coaching the teams, Mr. Rhodes, the groundsman and Mr. Cliffe for refreshments. Team, Played, Won, Lost, Drawn, For, Against Ist XV, 16, 11, 3, 2, 286, 95 2nd XV, 13, 4, 8, 1, 112, 141 Colts XV, 13, 7, 4, 2, 164, 86 Junior XV, 8, 3, 2, 3, 62, 23 MILNER, B. This is his third season as school Full Back. He is fast, can gather cleanly and punt accurately. This season, unfortunately, he seems to have lost some of the energy which made him outstanding in previous years. Half Colours. WHITEHEAD, D. A newcomer to School rugby. He is very keen - and with more experience should do well. He runs hard on the wing but his tackling is sometimes at fault. Half Colours. SALE. E. A prominent member of this year's team. Playing centre-three-quarter he has the ability to beat a man with ease. His tackling is very sound indeed. Treasurer. Repeat Full Colours. BRUCE, K. A good centre. In both attack and defence he is very reliable. His goal kicking abilities have been extremely welcome. Vice-Captain. Repeat Full Colours. POOLE, M. A penetrating wing three-quarter. He runs hard and straight, but should back up a little more. Secretary. Half Colours. STEAD, J. An excellent outside half. His acceleration when receiving the ball is outstanding. He is extremely elusive in attack and his football sense is so keen that he sometimes deceives his own side as well as his opponents. Repeat Full Colours. BIRKINSHAW, C. The smallest member of the team playing in probably the roughest position (scrum half). He combines very well with his outside half. Unfortunately he has missed part of the season through injury. Half Colours. FROST, R. A sound centre three-quarter who has played both forward and three-quarter this season. Half Colours. OUSELEY, A. A hard working prop-forward. He gets through a tremendous amount of work in the loose and line-out. Half Colours. FRY, M. After a shaky start at the beginning of the season he settled down as a hooker, and performed his main task (to get the ball) admirably. In the line-out he is overshadowed mainly through his lack of height, but in the loose he is usually where he is needed. WARDEN, A. A good prop-forward who binds very well in the tight, helping his hooker to a great extent. In the loose lie is very sound. ALLEN, J. A strong second-row-forward. In the line-out he uses his height to great effect and in the loose is always up with the ball. Full Colours. HUGHES, S. Partnering Allen in the second row he helps to form an extremely stable pair. In line-out work and in the loose he is very good. Half Colours. FISHER, P. A fast and quick-throwing loose forward who covers the opposing scrum-half very well. His main fault is that he tends to break a little too soon. Full Colours. O'MARR, T. A back forward who works very hard both in tight and loose. His tackling is good and he handles the ball well. Half Colours. MANNING, G. The scrum leader. Always tip with the play and his skill in getting the backs into motion has been very profitable. Full Colours. Schofield, P. U6S (Captain) SCHOFIELD, P. Captain for the second year in succession. Injuries kept him out of most of the games before Christmas. On the field he is a tower of strength and is the best wing-three quarter we have had for many years. Since Christmas he has adapted himself to the position of scrum half to replace the injured Birkinshaw. Repeat Full Colours. W.J.L. 7-A-SIDE RUGBY. 32 of the premier rugby-playing schools of Yorkshire and Durham took part in the 3rd Annual Tournament at Ilkley On April 5th. The standard of play in this competition has improved greatly as schools have come to regard this as a regular event in the sports calendar in spite of this, however, Hemsworth won and deserved a place in the final. There were a few moments of doubt in the first round against Hymers College, Hull, when the score was 10-10, but the greater stamina of the Hemsworth team brought the 6 further points in the last few minutes. Gaining confidence from this success, the Hemsworth team went on to play delightful football in defeating Otley (11-0), Rothwell (16-0), and Silcoates (16-5). Their heavy defeat of Rothwell was particularly praiseworthy since Rothwell had previously eliminated last year's finalists, Wakefield, by 3-0. The Hemsworth success was due not to one or two individuals but to the unselfish way in which all kept the ball moving and did everything possible to avoid being tackled in possession. After giving the backs a good share of the ball from both serum and line-out the forwards backed up well and there were occasions when the ball passed through every pair of hands on its way to the line. Heath G.S. had won the competition in 1951 and they still had 5 of last year's team available. Moreover, they had been given a bye into the second round and so had played only 3 games (v. Harrogate, Barnard Castle, and Keighley) to Hemsworth's 4 to reach the Final. Hemsworth was twice in the lead but, in the end, Heath won 11-6. They had one or two backs who were faster than anyone on the Hemsworth side but they had been kept in check by resolute tackling particularly by Stead and Sale, until the last few minutes. The Final is of longer duration than the other rounds and the fresher Heath team lasted the extra time better. They were greatly assisted too by vocal support from the touchline of greater volume than Hemsworth could provide. Bruce, Manning, Frost, Schofield (capt.), Stead, Sale and Whitehead represented the school. | |

| At the beginning of the last season only five team players remained from the previous year and unfortunately the 1st and 2nd VI's met with little success. In fact we lost every match against opposing schools. The 1st VI had some hard luck, however, for they were very narrowly beaten on several occasions. We were very sorry the Parents were unable to form a team to play us on Sports Day, but are looking forward to a match this season. We were also beaten by the Mistresses in the annual match at the end of term, but, in collaboration with the boys, we achieved our only victory in a mixed doubles match against the Staff. In spite of their continued defeats, both teams enjoyed all the matches and look forward to a more successful season this year. We feel we could do much better if we had more opportunities of practising together; the two present courts are inadequate for the number of girls who wish to play, and further demands are made on them by a growing interest in this sport among the senior boys. Repeat Colours were awarded to Dorothy Pickin (Capt.) and Beryl Whitehouse and Colours to Florence Crossley and Edith Lill. We should like to extend our very grateful thanks to Mrs. Owen and Miss. Wimpenny for their never-failing help and encouragement, to Miss. Metcalfe for her kind consideration in allowing us the use of the Domestic Science Room for refreshments and to Mr. Rhodes for his care of the courts. Edith M. Lill, U6A. | |

| Last season was not a very successful one, although, despite the lack of former members of last year's teams, we managed to improve on the previous season's results. Both teams consisted mainly of new members with one or two of last year's players and, at first, we were seriously handicapped by our lack of experience. But the surprising keenness and energy of these new players improved until both teams had very good fielding sides but not quite as good batting sides. The first team's failure in most of the matches it lost, was due to the batting. Sometimes this was extremely good but at most times the players seemed uncertain and nervous during the first innings and usually played much better in the second. Some of our most outstanding players (all of whom received their Colours), were Florence Gell (Back Stop), Maureen Mathers (2nd post) and Margaret Butterfield, who, as well as playing a fine 3rd deep, helped considerably as Vice-Captain. With a little more concentration on the batting. I think this year's team will prove to be even better than last year's. We deeply regretted Mrs. Owen's leaving and I would like to extend the team's thanks and best wishes to her. I would also like to thank on behalf of the team Miss. Saville who helped us considerably and last but not least, Mr. Rhodes for his work on the pitches. I would also like to welcome Miss Parkin on behalf of the team and hope that she will enjoy being with us. Joan Taylor, 5A. | |

Thank you, Geoff. Huddersfield Sports 1952 The Annual Inter-School Sports were held on the 9th July and Mrs. Butterworth presented the trophies to the winning schools. The standard of athletics was particularly high, and although the boys were a little disappointed at not completing the "hat trick" - they won the W.R.C.C. Shield in 1950 and 1951 - they did well to be runners-up on a day when 19 of the 30 records were broken. The School tied with Normanton for the Senior Boy's Plaque and won the Junior Plaque. The most outstanding of the school's athletes were Lodge K., who put up very creditable performances in the sprints, Trueman T., who made a new record for the Senior High Jump, and Homer R., who broke the Junior Boy's 220 yds. record. The girls again showed a slight improvement on the efforts of the previous year and finished in 3rd position. M. Butterfield won both the Senior High Jump and Long Jump events, while Joan Taylor won the Intermediate High Jump. School Sports The School Sports Day was held on the 16th July and the large number of parents who came to the school were not disappointed in the afternoon's sports. The only events in which records were broken were the Junior Relay Race - won by Price - and the Intermediate quarter-mile, which was won by Pearson in 59.7 seconds. There were, however, two records established in the Pole Vault, which was introduced to the school last year. Downes won the Senior event with a jump of 8 ft. 4 inches, while Hudson F. won the event for boys under 15 years of age with a jump of 6 ft. 7.5 inches. The fight for the Sports Cup was a keen one, and Talbot House only just managed to hold on to a very slight lead while Price House made a great effort to overtake them, an effort which gained them the Relay Cup. The trophies were presented by Alderman Flavell, this being the last of our Annual School Sports that he was to attend as Chairman of the Governors. Awards. Senior Victrix Ludorum - F. Crossley. Senior Victor Ludorum - Lodge, K. S. Junior Victrix Ludorum - J. Taylor. Junior Victor Ludorum - Pearson. Half-mile Cup - Pearson. Mile Cup - Graham. Sports Cup - Talbot. Standards Cup - Price. Relay Cup - Price. Triangular Athletics Match at Pontefract. On July 17th the boys took part in a triangular athletics match which was held at Pontefract. The other schools competing were King's School, Pontefract and Normanton Grammar School. Although we were beaten into 3rd place, the school's performance, particularly in the sprints, was quite good considering that the match took place on the day after the School Sports. Yorkshire Schools A.A. Championships. Last year the Y.S.A.A. Championships were held at Hull, and a small number of the school's athletes joined forces with three other schools and competed as Ackworth and District Schools A.A. Those from our school who gained places were F. Crossley, who won the Senior Girls 100 yds. Championship, Frost R., who was second in the Senior Boys Javelin and James H., who finished second in the quarter-mile championship. Yorkshire Youths and Junior Championships. The championships were held during the holidays and this prevented many of our best athletes from competing. Wall P., however, was placed 3rd in the Youth's Pole Vault and Trueman T. received a standard certificate for the Youth's High Jump. James, H., U6S. | |

| Goalkeeper ANN GREETHAM A very reliable member of the team who has acted quickly and accurately in tricky circumstances. Her "kicking" has been excellent throughout the season. Right Back EILEEN TATE now with more confidence in herself, Eileen has proved herself very reliable. Her tackling and driving are excellent. Left Back MABEL HORBURY her driving has improved as the season progressed but she must remember to stop the ball before hitting. Needs more speed and power of recovery. Right Half SHIRLEY LILLFORD an untiring player who shows up to the best advantage when the defence is hard pressed. Tackles persistently and clears well. Centre Half FLORENCE CROSSLEY and excellent player and Captain who is always reliable and pleasant to work with. (B.J. Owen) Left Half BERYL WHITEHOUSE a steady player who tackles persistently but she must concentrate more on stickwork and speed. Right Wing JOAN TAYLOR a speedy wing whose centre passing is good. More effort is needed to prove herself a reliable member of the team. Right Inner DOROTHY PICKIN an excellent inner who is quick and has developed an accurate shot. As Vice-Captain Dorothy has been very helpful. Centre Forward JEAN KENCHINGTON an efficient Centre Forward who did her job well in the circle. Her passing and tackling were good. We were very sorry to lose Jean at the end of January but we welcome BRENDA ACKROYD who has proved herself an asset to the team. With more confidence she should do well. Left Inner PAULINE PRATT a speedy little inner who makes a good pass to the wing and has developed a quick shot. Left Wing ELLEN GELL having overcome her ?offside? difficulties, Ellen has proved herself a reliable wing. Her tackling is good but she must learn to pass while still running at top speed. This season the weather has played havoc with our fixtures and many of our matches have been cancelled. However, the results of the matches played were favourable, for the 1st XI has played 8 matches, 6 of which were won, 1 lost and 1 drawn. This, I am sure, is due to the excellent team work. The Second XI however, has not been so successful, playing 5 matches and only winning one of them. The seniors who joined the team late in the season have been unlucky as they have had very few practices owing to bad weather. With more co-operation between individual members and with concentration on stickwork, the 2nd XI would be a far better team. Once again did "brawn" outclass "brain" when the 1st XI were beaten 1-0 by the boys. Last term the Staff also did the trick, and I would like to congratulate Mr. Senior on scoring three excellent goals. Repeat Colours awarded this year go to Florence Crossley and Dorothy Pickin and Full Colours to Shirley Lillford, Ann Greetham and Eileen Tate. On behalf of the teams I would like to thank Mrs. Owen for her encouragement and advice throughout the season. Our thanks also go to Mr. Rhodes for his excellent pitches. Finally, I would like to wish the teams every success in the coming seasons. Florence Crossley, U6A Captain. | |
| Rounders 2 | |
| Unfortunately, I have to report another unsuccessful season, the first team only winning one match out of seven, the second team being more fortunate in winning two and drawing one. Once again the first team?s failure was due to weak batting, but with constant practice there should be a definite improvement. The first team?s victorious match was a memorable one, not only because it was the first match of the season, but also because the achievement of winning the match meant the breaking of a five-year record held by Normanton, our opponents. But they avenged their defeat later in the season when they beat us 7-0. At the end of the season Repeat Colours were awarded to Ellen Gell, Full Colours to Shirley Lillford, M. Jones and M. Tinsley. On behalf of the team and myself I would like to extend our thanks to Mrs. Owen for her help and advice, and also to Mr. Rhodes for his constant care of the pitches. Ellen Gell U6S Captain | |
