The Colts XI succeeded in winning only 1 of their 5 games, but amongst them are several promising players who should prove very useful members of the senior teams in future years.

The 1st XV opened the 1954 season well, with wins against Thorne, Doncaster, Morley, Castleford and Wath. The only defeat suffered by the team over this period was at Castleford in a clean, hard match.
The play of backs and forwards up to this point was good, with new-comers Moore, B. and Pearson, K. showing very encouraging form. Of the older team members, Dillon, T. is worthy of special mention. His form has been outstanding, gaining a place for him in the Sheffield Schools' Team, which Stead, J. H. W. captained.
From this point, however, the team's performances slumped rather badly with matches lost to Silcoates, Rothwell, Wath, and West Leeds. It is true to say that the losing margin in each of these games was never greater than 5 points; and that, at some point in each match, Hemsworth held a winning margin. In the remaining matches it is to be hoped that such small margins will occasionally be, "on the right side".
Undoubtedly the highlight of the season was the Rothwell match. Against a team with the remarkable record of 16 wins in 16 matches, Hemsworth played well above their normal form. It was only near the end of a hard and exciting game that Rothwell scored the try which kept their record intact.
The record reads :-played 16. won 7; lost 8; drawn 1.
Points for 206; against 126.
2nd XV
The 2nd XV, we are glad to say,. have had a very good season so far, winning most of their matches. They have found a winning team which has been fielded consistently.
Record Played 13; Won 10; Lost 3.
Colts
Record : Played 10. Won 4; Lost 5; Drawn 1.
This Colts XV, under the leadership of Yates, N. and Thomas, L., have had several exciting matches winning, or losing, by only a few points. Most players have played well at practices and in matches, but Thompson, L., playing at either half-back position, is worthy of particular mention.
Under 14's
Matches played 4. Won 2; Lost 1; Drawn 1.
Despite the lack of fixtures, this side has produced some good exciting football, with forwards and backs linking together well.
Under 13's
Matches played 6. Won 2; Lost 3; Drawn 1.
This side includes some keen players who make up for the lack of inches with their enthusiasm. The forwards must learn to bind in the loose, and the backs to go to the man with the ball. Some of them should be more than useful players after a few more seasons.
The thanks of all the Rugby contingent are due to Messrs. Leonard, Taylor, Swinbank and Allan for their encouragement and help throughout the season; to Miss Brogden, who has filled Mrs. Cliffe's former position with complete success; and lastly, to Mr. Rhodes for keeping the pitches up to the standard we have come to expect at Hemsworth Grammar School.

After its successful season last year, the 1st XI has had rather mixed fortunes in 1954. Too often the attack has seemed to lack the 'bite' which was a feature of last year. At the beginning, of the season, our recognised bats-men failed to find their form and only in the last few matches have they shown their true quality.
Newcomers have been prominent in the team this season, Moore and Boycott topping the batting and Chambers heading the bowling averages.

The 2nd XI, captained by McCroakam, has played 4 matches but has succeeded in winning only one -- against the Staff!

Front Row L-R: G. Thacker, J. Winter, T. McCroakam, Warren, D. Sumnall
After practising assiduously, the Colts have been disappointed at having half their matches cancelled. Their enthusiasm in practices, and on the field, has shown that there is some very promising material amongst these youngsters, captained by Bramham.

During this season, the Netball Teams have enjoyed only moderate success, the chief reason for this being the lack of senior members. It is more than time that this deficiency was made up.
The vigour and enthusiasm shown by the Juniors do not, I fear, make up for lack of skill and experience; but, despite these difficulties, the teams have shown progress. The teamwork has improved greatly during the last few weeks of the season.
Out of a total of 18 matches played, the first team won 2, drew 2 and lost 6; the second team won 1, and lost 4; and the Junior team won 4 and lost 1.
On behalf of the teams, I should like to thank Miss Wimpenny and Miss Saville for their much-needed advice and encouragement.

County Championships
At the County Schools' Championships held at Beverley on June 26th, three pupils of H.G.S. were successful. Moore, following his success last year as a Junior, won the Inter. Boys' 440 yards Championship in 54.3 secs.; Margaret Butterfield was 2nd in the Senior Girls' Long Jump and Wall, P. was 3rd in the Senior Boys' Pole Vault. Moore has been selected to represent Yorkshire in the All England Schools' Championships at Ashington on July 17th and 18th.
INTER-GRAMMAR SCHOOL SPORTS - HUDDERSFIELD, 1954.
At the Inter-School Sports at Huddersfield this year, neither the girls' team nor the boys' team was successful in obtaining major honours. Most credit lies with the Junior Boys, who won the plaque for the championship of their section. The girls continue to improve and missed 3rd position by only half a point.
The following gave exceptional performances : M. Butterfield (Girl's Captain), 1st in Senior Girls' Long Jump (16' 1.5"- New Record); Hellewell C., (Junior Captain), 1st in Junior Boys' High Jump and 1st in Junior Boys 220 yds. Girls' Tennis 1954.
Last season, out of the sixteen matches originally arranged, seven were cancelled because of weather conditions. Of the remaining matches, one match was won and eight were lost.
Eileen Tate, the captain, was the only player to be awarded her tennis colours for the season. Very few of last year's teams are still at school but we look forward to
a more successful season.
The team would like to thank Miss Parkin for her help.
S. Lindley, 5A
Boys Tennis
Last year, the boys formed a tennis team and played three matches, winning one. The team beat Percy Jackson's School, and lost to Percy Jackson and Wakefield. This year, more fixtures have been arranged and a successful season is anticipated.
The amount of practice possible is, unfortunately, limited by the small number of courts available.
The members of the team would like to thank Mr. Owen and Mr. Taylor their coaching.
