This season, the second in which matches have been played against other schools, the team has shown much greater strength than that of last season. In spite of the small numbers who have been coming to practices on Wednesday evenings, the general standard of tennis seems to be improving, and in future seasons we look forward to beating our arch-enemies, Ackworth and Wakefield. We may even beat the staff!
RESULTS.
Percy Jackson's (Home and Away)-School Won.
Normanton (Home)-School Lost.
Ackworth (Home and Away)-School Lost.
There is some doubt about the year of the photo. Can anyone confirm it?
Some names have been provided by Terry McCroakam. Thank you, Terry.

1st XV.
This year, although the 1st XV. has not had an excellent season, it has been fairly successful, but the weather has led to the cancellation of five fixtures. There were odd occasions when a bit more 'Devil' might have come from the pack, but, on the whole, the side has played quite well as a team, and not, thank goodness, as a set of individuals. Although some of the lads went to the Yorkshire Trials at Christmas, no one was fortunate enough to obtain his place in the County Team.
2nd XV.
The 2nd XV. has not had a very good season, losing most of its matches, but we are hoping for better results next year.
Colts XV.
The Colts, under the inspired leadership of Toulson, are to be congratulated on an excellent performance throughout the season. This 1st XV. side of the Future has won all its matches. Well done!
Under 14 XV. and Junior XV.
The under 14 XV. has won the majority of its matches, whilst the Junior XV. has not been quite so successful, having only two victories from five matches. In these two sides we have a few good youngsters, who, we hope, will show the same interest when they reach the senior part of the School.
Once again, thanks go to Mr. Rhodes, for his wonderful work on the pitches, thus producing the standard we have come to expect at Hemsworth Grammar School. Thanks also to the kitchen staff for devoting its time to the teams on Saturday mornings.
Finally, on behalf of all the teams, I would like Messrs. Leonard, Taylor, Swinbank, and Colley, to know that their interest on the field is greatly appreciated.
For the statistically minded:-

Club Rugby
The boys leaving School who wish to join Wakefield Rugby Club will be welcome next season. Training starts on 16th August and continues through the season every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 o'clock. The ground is College Grove - 2 minutes from the 'bus station.
Hockey
First XI.
11 matches played: 5 won, 3 lost, 3 drawn; 31 goals for : 21 goals against.
The season opened with a disappointing defeat at Rothwell on a muddy pitch, but the 1st XI. soon showed how well they could play in dry weather defeating Castleford, Normanton, Goole and Ossett, and drawing with Ackworth and Doncaster. Only three matches were played in the Spring Term, the 1st XI. losing to Percy Jackson's, drawing with Thornes House and beating Ackworth by 3 goals to nil. The Staff Match was drawn, with no score. Both teams have improved during the season despite the atrocious weather which reduced practice time and also caused the cancellation of the Hockey Rally.
V. Manning, U.6S.
Netball
Once again this season, the netball teams have had very little success. Enthusiasm is lacking and our recollection of some of the team members is fast fading because of their absence from practices.
Very few fixtures were planned this season and some of these had to be cancelled because of weather conditions.
Out of a total of 10 matches played, the first team have won 1, and lost 4; the second team have won 1, and lost 3; and the Juniors have lost 1. Five matches have had to be cancelled.
On behalf of the teams, I would like to say how sorry we are to lose Mrs. Young and to thank her and Miss Collins for their patience and much-needed advice.
P. Harris, U.6A.
Rounders 1
This photo of the Second Team comes from Jacqueline Leonard. Thank you, Jacqueline.
Back Row L-R: Jenny Kelly, Pam Rushworth, Miss. Elliot, 4, Shirley Staunton
Front row L-R: Isabell Snowden, Jacqueline Leonard, 3, Irene Thorpe, Pauline Barratt
The first Rounders team consisted mainly of young players as only three members of last season's team remained at school. Although, of the four matches, the teams have lost two and drawn two, I have great hopes for a successful season next year, when we expect to have more fixtures.
The juniors have always been helpful, turning out for practices and helping at matches. I am sure many of them will be worthy members of future first teams.
I should like to thank, on behalf of the teams, Mrs. Young and Miss Parkin for their help, advice and coaching, and Mr. Rhodes for his excellent care of the playing fields.
E. Horbury, 5S.
Girls Tennis
This photo of the comes from Audrey Carrington. Thank you, Audrey.
Back Row L-R: Miss. Kilner, Susan Butcher, Anne Norrick, Miss. Elliot
Front row L-R: Audrey Carrington, Ann Wood, Marjorie Haigh, Doreen Harper, Ann Beaumont
Despite the two new grass courts, practice has been limited, and the season has been very unsuccessful. Another contributory cause may be the fact that the teams have been unsettled. At the beginning of the season, there were only two members of last year's tennis teams staying at school and many new players have been tried. Whatever the reasons, all matches have been lost, including the match against the parents on Sports Day.
RESULTS.

May we express our thanks to Mr. Wycherly for his care of the grass courts, and to the mistresses who have given up their valuable time to coach the team and supervise the matches.
Cricket
Image and some names from Don Weaver. Terry McCroakam has also sent in some of the names. Thank you.
Back Row L-R: Arthur Tickle, Geoffrey Boycott, John Winter, Ron Smethurst, Norman Yates, Terry McCroakam, Edwin Hambleton, Chris Butcher
Front Row L-R: W. Baxendale, Walter Hebden, Don Weaver, Brian Moore, Roland Hawcroft
Once again we have had a very successful season. The disadvantage of having no reliable spin bowlers was offset by the improved fielding of the 1st XI., the most outstanding fielder being McCroakam.
The team was composed almost entirely of all-round cricketers and had eight potential bowlers in the side. Noticeable were the all-round performances of Tickle, Yates, Boycott, Moore and Hebden.
Out of the 10 games played, 6 were won, 2 were drawn and 2 were lost.
I would like to thank Hambleton for his unfailing support as twelfth man, Butcher for his work as scorer and Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitches.
The Second XI has not been so successful, having won 1, lost 2 and drawn 1. This is partly due to the fact that the committee has been experimenting with new players with an eye to future first XI's.
The Colts XI won 2, drew 1 and lost 3 of their 6 games but each match provided entertaining cricket with close finishes. Sumnall and Hardy, Captain and Vice-Captain respectively were the most reliable batsmen and Mason, Hellewell and Hardy the most successful bowlers. Keenness was shown by many boys and there was always competition for places in the team.

Athletics
The Guest of Honour for this year's Sports' Day was Mrs. A. B. Clegg, wife of the Chief Education Officer. As the result of the fine organisation of Miss. Parkin and Mr. Leonard, the Sports ran smoothly, and fine weather helped to make it a most successful day.
