"Notice that Sheila Dellbridge has the number 2 on her PE top. This is because we had recently competed in the Yorkshire Schools Sports at Huddersfield (July 15th) and our school's competition number was 2. She had not yet removed it, but by the time we had the Athletics Team photo done it was gone."

YORKSHIRE SPORTS, BARNSLEY.
Several H G S Athletes this year represented the Hemsworth and District team at the Yorkshire Schools' Sports. Two firsts were gained by J. Nuttall (Senior Girls' Discus) and Moore (Senior Boys' 440), and three seconds by B. Nettleton (Junior Girls' 100), Hellewell (Junior Boys' 200) and Snookes (Intermediate Boys' Pole Vault). Hellewell and Moore have been selected for the Yorkshire team to compete in the English Schools Sports at Plymouth. Congratulations and best wishes.

"Just a thought, wasn't there a pretty good Boys' Hockey team? I remember Don Brett's elder brother was a good player. It was formed 1956-7 and encouraged by Mr. Losasso."

Girls Tennis

Although no matches have actually been won by the 1st Tennis V1 this season, the performances have certainly improved on those of last year. Thanks to the coaching of Miss Parkin, aided this year by Miss Hampshire, the girls are showing much greater interest, and it is very encouraging to see swarms of Juniors invading the tennis courts at lunchtime; perhaps this spells success for the future.

Another encouraging observation is the enthusiasm shown by the 2nd team members, which has resulted in a win for them this season. Let us hope that this enthusiasm will continue, and guarantee an even more successful season next year.

The Boys' Tennis team has had a fairly successful season but there is still room for improvement. More fixtures were arranged than in previous years and, of the seven matches played, three were won. This season, the team came nearest to beating the staff, just losing by 83 games to 61.

Unfortunately, practice was very limited but when the new courts are completed, more practice will we hope be possible, especially for the members of the lower school on whom the future teams will depend.

We would like to thank Mr. Owen and Mr. Taylor for their help.

Results:- Percy Jackson's (Home) won
Normanton (Home) won
Ackworth (Home and Away) lost
Wakefield (Away) lost

Many of the names have been provided by Terry McCroakam. Thank you, Terry.

With six of last year's team members still present and several promising youngsters coming up, it seemed that hopes of success this year were well founded. Unfortunately these hopes were not realised and the season's results show only one win - v. Pontefract (1st match). Although our defeats were heavy, they would have been even heavier had it not been for the splendid batting and bowling of Boycott - well done, Geoff! The encouragement from masters, more in evidence this season, should have rich dividends in the future, especially among the four young members of the X1.

The 2nd X1 have had a more successful season losing only two matches and we hope that some of its members will be available for next year's 1st X1. Let us hope at any rate that these youngsters will help to replace HGS in its proper status in school cricket.

Summary Results
The First Eleven played eight games, won one, drew three and lost four.
The Second Eleven played four games, won two, drew none, and lost two.
The Colts played five games, won three, drew none, and lost two

The 1st XV started the season badly by losing the first four matches, but since then the team has gone from strength to strength and has won 12 out of the last 14 games. At times, even under very trying conditions, the team has produced some really excellent open football. We reached the peak of form just after Christmas when we visited Heath G.S., and won a spirited battle, by 14 points to 3, completed in a snowstorm. Moore, a strong-running centre-three-quarter, has been outstanding in every department, and is worthy of special mention.

The Second XV has had a very good season, having won most of its matches. The Colts XV, the Under 14 XV and the Junior XV possess players who have shown the makings of fine footballers, and with a little more experience will undoubtedly do well, if they continue to show the same interest when they enter into senior rugby.

Early in the Spring Term, the teams lost the services of Mr. Leonard; we are pleased, however, to hear he is now well on the way to complete recovery; at this point we would like to congratulate Mr. Taylor on being a really grand substitute. Once again, the Rugger teams extend their thanks to Mr. Rhodes (the human snow-plough) for taking great care with the pitches; to the kitchen staff for preparing the refreshments, and to all the various members of Staff who have helped in coaching the teams.

Summary Results
The First XV - Played 18, Won 12, Lost 6, and scored 218 points, with 126 points scored against.

The Second XV - Played 15, Won12, Lost 2, Drew 1, and scored 239 points, with 82 points scored against.

The Under 14 XV - Played 5, Won 1, Lost 4, and scored 15 points, with 48 points scored against.

The Junior XV - Played 8, Won 1, Lost 7, and scored 15 points, with 138 points scored against.

CLUB RUGBY - Boys leaving School who wish to join Wakefield Rugby Club will be welcome next season. Training starts on 14th August and continues throughout he season every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 o'clock. The ground is College Grove - two minutes from the 'bus station.

Hebden, W. (Captain) UV1A.

Under 13 XV- The Junior XV have had a disappointing season. It was clear from early October who would play in the team - there were many promising players - but although they continued to show enthusiasm and vigour after a string of defeats, they failed to play as a team and they forgot, in the stress of a match, he running and passing which they performed so well in practices.

Although Atkins and Cuthbert tried hard as Captain and Vice-Captain, the team lacked 'old hands' - no member of last year's team was eligible to play. On occasions, Wilson ran well, Jennings kicked and tackled well, Wigglesworth showed promise at scrum half, while Tibble, Matthews and Morrissey were tireless amongst the forwards.

Hockey

The Hockey Teams this year have had a fairly successful season. The 1st X1 having won 4, lost 5 and drawn 2 games; the second X1 having won 4, lost 5 and drawn 2 and the Juniors having won 1 and lost 1. Bad weather prevented a fair number of the matches from being played.

The weather cleared up, however, for the Rally, in which eight schools took part, Percy Jackson's Grammar School being the winners and Ossett Grammar School the runners-up.

At the end of the season, 1954-55, Repeat Colours were awarded to V. Manning and J. Nuttall, and Full Colours to M. Mathers, A. Ward and M. Pearson.
At the end of the season, 1955-56, Repeat Colours were awarded to A. Ward, M. Mathers and J. Nuttall, and Full Colours to J. Foreman and M. Phillips.

On behalf of the teams I would like to thank Miss Parkin and her games-helpers for the encouragement and advice they have given us throughout the season. I should also like to extend our thanks to Mr. Rhodes for his excellent care of the pitches.

Jean Nuttall (Captain) VT

Netball

Primarily, on behalf of us all - well both - netball teams, I would like to extend our thanks to Mrs. Podmore for her help and advice during the season. Although this advice was often given, we did not seem able to produce the desired results. In fact we became accustomed to hearing on Monday morning, "The Netball Team lost....."
We must, however, be a stubborn set, for we managed to end the season with two victories, one of which was the match with our old "enemies", Felkirk Modern School. We are particularly proud of our performance because in previous matches with this school, we have invariably had to be good losers.

We managed to secure only two fixtures for the Juniors, which was a great pity for, although they were keen at the beginning, their enthusiasm flagged towards the end of the season. We understand their difficulty, and hope that next season they will re-appear with their interest.

Most of this year's team members will be able to play again next year, so there should be an improvement. Colours were awarded to E. Hirst and J. Snookes. To the members I should like to say, "Keep Trying".
