(McCroakam T., Donaldson P., Homer R., Moore B., Mansfield, Toulson D., Parkinson T., Ardron A., Stansfield R., Pickering A., Appleby C., Wild J., Garbett C., Curran J., Longden D. (Captain))

McCROAKAM, T. Positional play and tackling could be improved, but his handling and punting have been excellent. His goal-kicking abilities have been most welcome.

DONALDSON, P. He runs straight and hard on the wing, and is a fist-class tackler, but his kicking is sometimes faulty. A useful centre in an emergency.

HOMER, R. A good centre who uses his speed to advantage. He tackles low and hard, but occasionally tends to hold the ball a little too long.

MOORE, B. Moore's skill and experience have been a great asset to the side. He is powerful in attack and strong in defence. (Vice-Captain)

MANSEFIELD, J. He has adapted himself well to the wing position; he tackles low and hard, but must go harder for the line.

TOULSON, D. An excellent outside half. He is solid in defence and extremely elusive in attack. Sometimes his fine footballing ability deceives his own side as well as his opponents.

PARKINSON, T. A good prop forward who uses his weight to advantage. Hard-working in both tight and loose.

ARDRON, A. He is rather tall as a hooker, but has overcome this handicap admirably and generally holds his own. Useful in the lineouts and loose.

STANSFIELD, R. A hard-working prop forward. He must learn that absolute fitness is essential.

PICKERING, A. A very good second-row forward, strong in both tight and loose. He uses his speed to join in with his three-quarters, and has scored an outstanding number of tries for a forward.

APPLEBY, C. Along with his partner he used his height to advantage in the lineout. He does an enormous amount of work in both tight and loose. An inspiring pace-leader.

WILD, J. A good wing forward, particularly adept in forward play where he can use his footwork. A highly improved tackler.

GARBETT, C. Garbett is a reliable back-row forward, particularly in defence. He is a strong tackler, and his stride gives him a deceptive turn of speed.

CURRAN, J. A capable wing forward who is always up with the play. He shoves well and breaks quickly, but his tackling is sometimes at fault.
Longden, D. U6S (Captain)

LONGDEN D.(Capt.) A tireless forager and a conscientious Captain. (L.M.T.)

This has been a successful season for the School 1st XV. A good pack is a sure foundation for a successful side, and this year the forwards have been exceptionally strong. The backs have shown that they can be fast and dangerous, but on occasions their handling has had erratic tendencies.

Despite a poor beginning, the 2nd XV have had a most promising season, and their record in later games speaks for itself. Their success has been founded on team-work, and it would be invidious to single out anyone for special mention. On behalf of the teams I would like to thank Messrs. Tate, Taylor, Colley, Swinbank and Sale for their help and encouragement. Once again our thanks are extended to Mr. Rhodes for his care of the fields, the 4th Form girls for their help with refreshments, and Mr. S. Bingley for providing the transport for all away matches.

Front Row L-R: Martin Rhodes, Brian Lees, David Law, Albert Parkin, Keith Gainey, Colin Bond, Brian Pawson

The under 13 Rugby XV had a fairly successful season this year. They started the season by defeating Thorne G.S. by 9pts to 3 and ended with an excellent win against Barnsley G.S. by 39pts. to nil. Throughout the season the team has shown great keenness, zest and enthusiasm and they have at all times tried to play good rugby. The two biggest defeats against Wakefield earned for the the team well-merited praise for their courage and resolution in the face of heavy odds. They also lost narrowly to Rothwell G.S. by 8pts. to 6. Towards the end of the season the forwards improved in technique with the result that the three-quarters had more of the ball and thus the team began to score more points. Finally, mention must be made of the fearless tackling and the determined running of the three-quarters throughout the season. Special praise must be given to A. Parkin for the way he has led the team.

This year the First X1 has enjoyed a highly successful season. We began with only four regular first team members - McCroakam, Boycott, Hambleton and Moore - but the newcomers - Kenningham, Sell, Wilde, Randall, Cartledge, Trueman and Pratt have admirably fulfilled expectations. I would like to thank 'Mac' and Boycott for their assistance as joint vice-captains. On behalf of the team I would like to express my appreciation of the efforts of the members of Staff concerned, especially to Mr. Tate; to Mr. Rhodes for his careful preparation of our wickets; to Connolly for his work as secretary; to Sell for acting as treasurer, and finally, to Ackroyd, our scorer.

THE COLTS X1
The fast bowling of Matthews and Loring and the fielding of the whole team have been the main contributions to the success of the Colts this season. Difficult pitches have prevented high scores but the batsmen have shown courage and determination. The side has been ably captained by Jennings.

Colts Rugby

Back Row L-R: Dave Nye, Dave Hinks, Norman Hughes, Valentine
Middle Row L-R: Frank Morley, Alan Cole, Peter Whitehead, Mr. Colley, Sykes Beaumont, Richard Brennan, Phil Drury
Front Row L-R: Philip Steele, Peter Richmond, Geoff Cartledge, Peter Douglas, Howard Widmore, Peter Lockett, John Cooper

The Team
Moxon and Morley at full back; Whitehead, Beaumont, Cartledge, Lockett and Nye in the threes; Brennan and Steele at half-back; Nunn, Richmond, Drury, Cole, Douglas, Hughes, Hinks, Valentine, Widmore, Cooper and Cartwright in the forwards; also Randall, Ward and Jones.

The Colts have had a successful and enjoyable season. The team has included several players of outstanding ability but the whole team has played well together and developed its skills and knowledge of the game very creditably. There have been enough good reserves to fill competently the gaps caused by injury and illness. Under the spirited leadership of Douglas and Cartledge, the team has played good rugby; its success has been due largely to the enthusiasm, loyalty and hard work of all the players.

The Sheffield Nine-a-side Tournament
In October, the following team won the tournament and shield:
Whitehead, Beaumont, Cartledge, Lockett, Brennan, Steele, Widmore, Drury, Douglas.
South Yorkshire Under 15
In December, Widmore, Valentine and Brennan played at Sheffield in the game against Leicestershire. Douglas had been appointed Captain but injury prevented his playing. For the game against Nottinghamshire at Nottingham in March, Douglas, Widmore and Cartledge were selected.

Hockey

A new team, we began the season hopefully, but lack of experience marred the play and we won only one match during the Autumn term. After Christmas, between the cancellations, the team picked up brilliantly, showing what feats they were capable of performing when they played as a team. The forward line particularly improved, using more dash and better tactics. This was due to the constant support given by halves and backs. The team wish to thank Mrs. Blatherwick and her colleagues, who have optimistically guided and encouraged us to the very last details. There are also the people behind the scenes to thank: Mr. Rhodes for marking the pitches and warning off too-enthusiastic juniors in bad weather; Mr. Leary, who has waited patiently for the "cancelled" message early on Saturday mornings; and Miss Metcalfe who once again consented to our using the Domestic Science room for meals. With trials and errors we braved our way through the season, to retire a sadder, but wiser, team.

Netball

The Team
Jean Snookes (Captain), Eileen Hurst (vice-capt.), Pat White (goal shooter), Margaret Bloore (goal defence), Margaret Penny (centre attack), Gloria D. Farnsworth (centre defence), Isobel Snowden (attack).
A very successful season - we have only lost to one school throughout. This success is due to the enthusiasm of the team members who have played hard all the time. I would like to extend the thanks of all team members to Mrs. Blatherwick for her valuable advice and coaching. At last, we know how netball should be played!

This year we have played only four matches owing to the weather and we have lost all of these. We have still two matches to play and we are hoping for a win before the end of the season. The standard of tennis this year has improved tremendously on last year's and this is not only due to the hard work and enthusiasm shown by the teams, but to the excellent coaching of Mrs. Owen and Miss Hampshire. We began the season with only two from last year's first team and after two matches we lost Valerie Higham, the captain, who had a back injury. We were very sorry indeed when we heard of Valerie's accident, but she is greatly improved and will once again be able to take an active part in tennis next year. It has been very heartening to notice the enthusiasm for tennis amongst the juniors and I really think that in a few years' time Hemsworth Grammar School will be noted for its high standard of tennis.
Gloria D. Farnsworth (Captain)

Boys Tennis

This season has seen the recognition of the Boys' Tennis Team as an official School team. We have thus been able to turn out, on most occasions, a team at full strength. However, the results have once more shown Ackworth and Queen Elizabeth's G.S. much the better teams. Our standard of play has been below normal because practice has been restricted owing partly to the number of courts available but mainly to the coincidence of matches and exams. Fortunately the new courts are almost complete, and we hope members of the Lower School will soon be able to participate in the game which they have so far been denied. On behalf of the team we would like to thank Mr. Owen and Mr. Taylor for their unfailing support and encouragement'
RESULTS:
Percy Jackson's G.S. (away) Won 56 games to 25.
Normanton G.S. (home) Won 53 games to 21 (rain stopped play)

Ackworth School (home) Lost 7and a half sets to 1 and a half
Queen Elizabeth's G.S. (home) Lost 91 games to 52

Yorkshire Athletics Championships

This year the Yorkshire Championships were held at Keighley on Saturday 29th June. There were 1,200 competitors from all parts of Yorkshire and the different colours of their dress made an impressive sight in the march past which was taken by the mayor of Keighley. There were 23 competitors from Hemsworth G.S. who were competing on behalf of the Ackworth Association. Two of our athletes, Mansfield and Moore, won their events, intermediate pole vault and senior 440 yards respectively. A number of other competitors were among the first six in their events. Altogether it was a successful and enjoyable day.
