Team Record:Won 9, Lost 5, Drawn 1

It has been a fairly successful season for the Colts. The team won their first few games before losing 15-14 to Silcoates, in the half-term game. Despite the absence of players at the South Yorkshire Trials, the team beat Wath (22-6) and Doncaster (31-6) quite decisively. The highlight of the season was the game against Wakefield, when we suffered our only home defeat (13-6). The double was achieved against Crossley and Porter who were defeated 67-3 in the away match. The season was rounded off with victories over Spurley Hey (20-6) and Nunthorpe (19-0).
Field and Daley were outstanding amongst the forwards and the whole back division played well, especially Conway, Valentine and Bond. The team was captained by Parkin who was the most successful goal-kicker.
Our thanks go to Mr. Pacy who gave up so much of his time to coach us and give us the benefit of his experience, and for his refereeing of matches.
The leading try-scorers were Bond and McKenzie.

Five of the Colts' team represented South Yorkshire in two matches. They were Conway, Daley, Valentine, Field and McKenzie.

Under 14 XV
Match Record : Played 12 Won 4 Lost 8 Drawn 0 Points for 149 Points against 188

After their success as a team last year it was confidently expected that this would be another successful season, but there have been many disappointments. Sugden, the captain, at full back has set a fine example and tried to rally his team which has occasionally become demoralised in defeat. His kicking has been good, and with Wilkes he has borne the brunt of the tackling among the backs.

Ward missed the early matches through injury, with the result that when Jones was not available and Woolly took his place at stand-off, there was a lack of players of weight, size and experience in the centre. When given the ball and the room to move, both wings showed that they could score tries. Indeed, Taylor on the right wing has been the "find" of the year. Woolly has frequently used the "dummy" to good effect and has kicked some good goals.

The forwards have often not been as tall and heavy as their opponents. Individually they have played well, showing vigour and determination, but they have never really settled down and played as a team. White and Cooper have both made good bursts, but have often held on to the ball for too long.

Many of the games have produced high scores, some for Hemsworth, more for their opponents. The team was seen at its best in the ding-dong struggle with Wakefield (lost 18-23) and in the last game at Nunthorpe where all combined well to gain a convincing victory.

UNDER 13 XV
Match Record : Played 10 Won 7 Lost 2 Drawn 1 Points for 140 Points against 25

The Under 13 XV have had a most successful season. They have played well as a team and shown courage, determination and an intelligent understanding of the game. The team fortunately has one or two outstanding individuals. Hannan, a loose forward who has scored fifteen tries, and Brocklehurst, with his accurate touch and place kicking, have played a great part in the team's successes. The team were unbeaten until the middle of the season when they lost in two successive games against Wakefield and Nunthorpe by the same score, 8 points to 3. Their most notable victory was against Wakefield at Hemsworth when they defeated the opposition clearly and decisively by 16 points to nil.

As a team they still have much to learn, and it is hoped that the forward play, particularly in the line-outs and the loose, will improve next year. The backs must learn to run straight and to pass the ball accurately

Nevertheless, the team has a proud and satisfying record and we are looking forward to some good rugby in the coming season.

Under 12 XV
Match Record : Played 5 Won 2 Lost 2 Drawn 1 Points for 24 Points against 19

As rugby is a new game to most First-Formers, nearly 30 players represented Hemsworth in the course of 5 matches, so that most potentially good players were given an opportunity. This meant that team-work suffered, and as the pack was usually smaller than that of the opposition, the playing record was quite satisfactory.

The main deficiency seems to be in tall, heavy forwards for the second row. The passing of the three-quarters was usually lively and entertaining, though not always profitable, and the tackling in the open by forwards and backs (particularly by Coope) was often superb.

Hryscho the captain, and Rooker led the team well. The captain's leadership in the last two games was sorely missed. Fearnside- an outstanding prospect- Coop, Poole and Edwards were the best of the forwards, while Coope, Johnson, Oxley, Fearnley and Brooke played well in the backs.

The general games' sense of all players was very impressive and many more, besides those mentioned, should develop into fine players.

The results so far this season have been disappointing. Only three matches have been won. However, the last match was won convincingly by 10 wickets. Batsmen and bowlers seem to have found their form at last and we look forward to finishing the season with victories.

Our thanks go to Mr. Rhodes for his excellent preparation of the wickets, and to Mr. Pacy and Mr. Sale for their coaching.

Cross Country

This year has been a successful one for the Cross-country Team. At the Annual District Trials the following boys were chosen to represent the Ackworth district in the Yorkshire Championships:
Juniors....................Pead, Brailsford.
Intermediate...........Cartledge, Herbert, Morrissey.
Seniors...................Nye.

Apart from these trials there have been two triangular meetings and the annual School Cross-Country. In the School Cross-Country, the team placings were as follows :
1st. PRICE 150.2 points
2nd. HOLGATE 137.08 points
3rd. TALBOT 122.15 points
4th. GUEST 112.03 points.

In the first triangular meeting Hemsworth competed against Castleford G.S. and The King's School, Pontefract. Each school entered senior, intermediate and junior teams. The individual and team winners in the junior and intermediate events were from Hemsworth. Our seniors, however, were relegated to last place.

The second meeting at Doncaster was against Doncaster G.S. and Doncaster Technical School. Our juniors and intermediates were once again successful- they maintained their records and won their team events on aggregate, although the individual winners were not Hemsworth men. The seniors showed an improvement by coming second in their event. Adding the points gained in all three sections, the final totals were as follows:
1st. Hemsworth..........................193 points
2nd. Doncaster G.S.....................257 points
3rd. Doncaster Technical School...377 points

The juniors and intermediates have learnt to run as a team, and if they continue to do so, they will be formidable opponents in the future.
Cartledge, G.M. VS

Tennis

GIRLS' TENNIS, 1959
This has been one of the best seasons for many years. We have won eight of the nine matches played, suffering our only defeat in the last match and that by a narrow margin.
The highlight of the season was the match against Ackworth School, our old rivals, which we won after a very close struggle. With four members of this year's first team remaining, next season should prove even more successful. Colours were awarded to all members of the team in recognition of their good work: Gloria Farnsworth (Repeat Colours), Dora Lumby, Dilys Hughes, Gwen Cavanagh, Shirley Staunton, Carole Jordan.
The first team has shown what can be achieved and I hope this is the first of many good seasons to come.
Gloria D. Farnsworth (Captain)

BOYS' TENNIS, 1959
This has again been an unsuccessful season for the Boys' Tennis VI.
Some good tennis has been played, but on the whole, concentration and consistency have been lacking. Results apart, however, the season has been useful in giving members of the team match experience and practice. Unfortunately, we shall be losing Goodwin who has been a source of strength with his quick and efficient net play, but as most of the present team will

Boys Athletics

More boys have taken an active interest in Athletics this season, and, as a result, two new, outstanding athletes have come to the fore: Smith, who has proved himself to he the schools' best all-rounder by winning the Victor Ludorum, and Trueman who has shown great promise as a sprinter.
The boys' team has taken part in three athletics matches so far; a triangular meeting with Wath and Mexborough and the Huddersfield Inter School Sports are still to come. Two matches have been won: the school beat Maltby Grammar School by 158.5. points to 134.5, and Doncaster Grammar School and Doncaster Technical College by 280 points to 180 and 140 points respectively. In the other match, Hemsworth came second to Castleford (246 points) by gaining 213 points and Pontefract came third with 159.
Our successes have been underlined by the number of boys from Hemsworth who represented the Ackworth District in the Yorkshire Schoolboys Championships. Trueman and Brennan took part in the record-breaking 4 x 110 yards relay team, which set up a new Yorkshire Championship record of 44.8 seconds. Snookes retained his Yorkshire title by winning the senior pole vault with a vault of 9 feet 3 inches.
Among the many notable performances achieved this season, two are worthy of special mention: Smith and Palmer both recorded a height of 5 feet 6.5 inches for the High Jump and Randall broke the Senior Javelin record on Sports Day with a throw of 173 feet 2.5 inches. High hopes are expected of Pead, an intermediate, who recorded a time of 4 minutes 58 seconds for the mile race in the Yorkshire Championships, and McKenzie who has put the shot over 49 feet in training.
On behalf of the team, I wish to thank Mr. Tate for all his help in making these successes possible, and also the other members of staff who acted as officials at these meetings.
J. Wild (Captain)

Netball

GLORIA D. FARNSWORTH. Captain - Defence. A very efficient captain. She has worked hard to improve the standard of the teams this season, and has set a good example by her high and accurate standard of play. Repeat Colours. (O. M. Walker).

MARGARET PENNY. Vice-Captain - Centre Attack. Her leaping and dodging are always outstanding and an example to the rest of the team. Repeat Colours.

SYLVIA GASKELL. - Attack. Although her spring for the ball from the centre pass is always good, her shots at goal have been unreliable. With more practice and hard work, she should become a most useful member of the team.

ISABELL SNOWDEN - Goal Shooter. This year her shots at goal, especially from the edge of the circle, have been outstanding, and her dodging in the circle has greatly improved. Colours.

JANET NOBLE - Centre. New to the first team this year, she has played some good passes, but must learn not to send 'loopy' passes.

SHEILA KELSALL - Centre Defence. Although not playing in her usual position of attack, she has shown herself worthy of the first team. She must, however, learn to control her passes and not to throw wildly.

CHRISTINE GASKELL - Goal Defence. Her height gives her an advantage over her opponents and she must make more use of this. Her defence play has improved and with more experience, she should be a very strong defence player.

This year the first team has only played four matches, several others being cancelled, Three of these, however, were lost and the fourth was drawn. There are two reasons for this poor record. First, although there were five members left from last year's team, the two empty positions were both defence positions and this has perhaps weakened the team. Secondly, with only a few fixtures, the team's attitude and enthusiasm have not been those expected from a first team and consequently consistent, hard practice has been lacking. There is a bright side to the picture, however, for the Juniors have done very well this season and have won all their matches. There are some very promising Juniors who should do well in the future.

Gloria D. Farnsworth, U.VI.A.

Hockey (Boys)

The season, on the whole, has been rather disappointing. A total of six matches was played; five were lost and one was drawn. Our full backs, Wilford and Guest, played well. They have learnt to hit the ball hard, but they have much to learn about the tactics of good defence. Among the forwards, teamwork was sadly lacking and accurate passing a rarity - individuals do not make a team.
But in spite of the poor results, the general standard of boys' hockey has improved in a comparatively short time and the morale of the team has been good. Next year we hope to have a bigger fixture list and this should give the team more match experience and a better incentive to play good hockey. The majority of this year's team will be with us and this will encourage the new members to enter more easily into the spirit of the game.

Basketball

Lack of experience was a handicap, especially to the Senior Team, who lost all the three matches they played, but on all occasions, the team has suffered because of illness or injury, and has consequently never been at full strength. The Old Hilmians match turned out to be a bitter struggle, while in both games against Doncaster the team was very narrowly beaten.

The Juniors, under the captaincy of Parkin, played two games against Doncaster. Although they narrowly lost the away game, they won the return match quite convincingly.

The season has produced one or two promising players, and both teams should show a marked improvement next season. We all wish to thank Mr Powell, Mr Knox and Mr Tate for their constant encouragement and patient coaching.
Wild, J. UV1A.

Rugby First XV

Last year's outstanding achievement tends to overshadow this year's promising performance. As only five of last year's team remained, the results are quite creditable.

Because the back division had to be remoulded, it lacked drive in attack during the early part of the season, and consequently the tries were scored from the back row and scrum-half positions. Later on, the backs developed speed; they showed vitality in attack and stalwartness in defence. This, together with the zeal of the forwards, produced a well-balanced side. Trueman's exhilarating play deserves special mention. Our sincere thanks go to Mr Tate and Mr Taylor for their unceasing encouragement and advice. As this is Mr Taylor's last season, I wish, on behalf of past and present members of teams, to thank him most heartily for his admirable services to School's rugby - nine years of coaching. The 1st XV wish him the very best of luck in his new situation - even though he will be teaching at a 'Soccer' school! We shall miss him.

The team is very grateful to Mr Rhodes for his care of the pitches. We especially wish to thank Mrs Tate and Mrs Taylor and the Fifth-form girls who helped them, for all their hard work in preparing refreshments.

Repeat colours were awarded to Wild and Trueman.

Full colours go to Beaumont and Lockett.

Match Record: Played 18, Won 9, Lost 6, Drawn 3. Points for - 123, Points against - 123.

Rugby Second XV

The 2nd XV have had a moderate season, even though only two or three of last year's team remained, and in spite of the fact that on several occasions their players were required for first team duty.
They have played well as a team rather than as individuals, though Wigglesworth, Griffiths, Ackroyd and Anderson, newcomers from last year's Colts, have often been quite outstanding and have given consistent support throughout the season. Play in general has been good, but the team as a whole lacked the final initiative to score the necessary tries. The aggregate for the season shows this - there was an average of less than two tries per match. The conditions this season have been very favourable, except for the snowy period in the New Year, when five matches were cancelled. After this, the team was undefeated and preserved its unbeaten home record.

Match Record; Played 16, Won 7, Lost 5, Drawn 4, Points for - 85, Points against - 64.

HOCKEY 1st XI REPORT
The 1958-59 season has been one of the most successful for many years. The team won seven matches, drew four and lost only two.
We began the season with a substantial advantage as only four of last year's 1st XI had left. The newcomers, J. Leonard, E. Ford, D. Wood and G. Cavanagh soon settled down in their respective positions.
In November, a party went to see the England v. Ireland match at Manchester. Although the visibility was poor, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. England won by seven goals to three. On December 6th the Wakefield and District Hockey Trials were held. The School was represented by N. Carlisle, M. Wright, C. Jordan, D. Lumby, S. Staunton and S. Butcher. No one was successful in the final selection.
Owing to bad weather, the Christmas Staff v. Girls match was cancelled. The weather in the New Year also disrupted our fixture list - five matches were cancelled.
The Hockey Rally, held at Hemsworth, was won by Ossett Grammar School who played in Section 2. The School team, playing in Section 1, was narrowly beaten by Percy Jackson's Grammar, but beat Pontefract High School by one corner after extra time. The match against Selby Grammar School, in this section, was close and exciting --- Hemsworth was beaten after extra time.

All members of the team are grateful to Miss Walker who has encouraged our efforts so enthusiastically throughout the season. We also thank Miss McGlade, Miss Harrison, Miss Hampshire, Mrs. Whittaker and Mrs. Lumb for helping with the Saturday fixtures.
Susan I. Butcher, L.VI.R. (Captain)

INDIVIDUAL HOCKEY REPORT
N. CARLILE; (repeat colours) G. K. Has gained confidence this season. Her keen, lively playing has been a great asset to the team.

M. WRIGHT; (repeat colours) R.B. She has been a very accurate player and has combined well with L.B. in strong defensive play.

D. WOOD; L.B. Although this has been her first season, she has proved to be a dependable player. She has made definite improvement in her style and adapted herself quietly to working with R.B.

J. LEONARD; R.H. After an unsteady start, Jacqueline settled down to play a good game; she still tends to be inaccurate at times, but with more experience, maintaining her present rate of progress, she will make a very capable half.

C. JORDAN; (colours) C.H. Has adapted herself very well to the centre this season. Her main problem is to concentrate on distribution of the ball, in relation to the play in progress.

E. FORD; L.H. A steady first season. Her tackling has improved a great deal, but is still marred by lazy footwork which often leads to obstruction. She must work hard on this weakness next season.

G. CAVANAGH; R.W. A very successful first season. She has played a safe, simple but effective game, combining well with her inner.

D. LUMBY; (colours) R.I. She has worked hard in the forward line and has proved a successful goal scorer.

S. STAUNTON; (colours) C.F. A most reliable player. She has played exceptionally good hockey all season, keeping the forwards in line and on their toes. She used initiative in the circle and was the highest goal scorer.

E. TOULSON; L.I. Ellen has boundless energy, but she must contain herself and learn how to control the ball and then her speed will be a great asset. She shows promise of being a first rate player.
S. Butcher (Captain)

S. BUTCHER; (repeat colours) L.W. She has worked with great enthusiasm and efficiency as Captain this season and has been worthy of the successful results of the team. She has maintained a high standard of play throughout the season and has used varied and skilful tactics at every opportunity.
