The rounders team this year have had a moderately successful season. There have been four teams in action this term, the 1st, 2nd, Under 15, and Under 14.

Matches have been arranged every week and we have been fortunate in that none have been cancelled because of bad weather. All the players seem to have enjoyed the season, despite the lack of sparkling results.

Results, so far this season:
1st IX. Played 4, won 2, lost 2.
2nd IX. Played 4, won 2, lost 2.
1.15 IX. Played 5, won 1, lost 4.
U.14 IX. Played 2, lost 2.

Colours have been re-awarded to Nora Carlile, Gail Picken.
New colours have been awarded to Ellen Toulson.

Netball

This year the First Team have played only three matches of which they have won two. Fortunately their enthusiasm has not been dampened by the lack of fixtures, and practices, though irregular, have been well-attended.

With regard to the Second and Junior teams their enthusiasm outweighed their ability, but doubtless future years will show a marked improvement.

Inter-Form Netball 1960

An innovation in the School's netball activities has been an Inter-form Netball Tournament organised by Miss Musgrave. Those taking part have shown great keenness, especially the junior teams who perhaps have been urged on by thoughts of meeting the Upper Sixth in the final. The Tournament was eventually won by the Upper Sixth.

This has not been a very suceessful season, the Under 15 winning only one match, drawing three, and losing five. In spite of this, we have improved considerably. Perhaps with more practice, we should have obtained a better standard.

We would like to thank Miss Musgrave, Miss Tate and Miss Child, for giving up their spare time to train our team.

Record - Played 14. Won 8. Lost 5. Drew 1. Points for 133. Against 94.
The team began the season with a good back division and a rather weak pack. As the season progressed, the forwards were blended into a really good unit and carried the day on several occasions. Nicoll, Chaplin, Cooper and White were the outstanding forwards. Jones was included as scrum half mid-way through the first term, and he developed into a very capable tactician. Sugden, Ward and Woolley played well in the backs. The highlights of the season were good games against Wakefield Q.E.G.S. and Wath G.S. In the Wakefield match, the team played above themselves and held a slight lead until well into the final quarter. Wakefield's big pack playing with the slope and wind in the second half, lasted better than the School's, and was rewarded with two late tries. Result - School 10pts., Wakefield Q.E.G.S. 20pts.
The Wath match was a very even game, and both sides played attractive rugby. The scores were level with only a few minutes to play, when Woolley dropped a fine goal. Result - School 6pts., Wath G.S. 3pts.
On several occasions the team was handicapped by the absence of players who took part in the following games:
1st. - Sth Yorks. Trial (at Stairfoot, Barnsley). Woolley D, Ward D, Sugden D, Taylor J, Jones D, White N, Chaplin I, Nicoll D, Cooper M.
2nd. - Sth Yorks. Trial (at Stairfoot, Barnsley). Woolley D, Ward D, Sugden D, Chaplin I, Nicoll D, Cooper M.
Sth Yorks. XV (v) Leicestershire (at Leicester). Cooper M, Sugden D, Woolley D, (reserve)
Sth Yorks. XV (v) Nottinghamshire (at Sheffield). Cooper M, Sugden D, Ward D, Woolley D (reserve)
Sugden played for the North of England against the Midland, and in the Final English Trial he was selected as reserve for England in the matches against Wales at Cardiff Arms Park and Twickenham.
The following boys played for the Colts XV. Woolley D, Ward D, Ward F, Cropper P, Sugden D, Taylor J, Jones D, Robinson J, Delbridge T, Wright D, Dallywater R, Benson A, Chaplin I, Byrom C, Cooper M, White N, Richards J, Newitt R, Elliot C, Nicoll D, Tate N, Hudson N.

Team Trueman (Capt), Deeley (Vice - Capt.), Morley, Hawcroft, Cooper, Cartledge, Lockett, Richmond, Anderson, Ackroyd, Hinks, Randall, Widmore, Smith.

Played 13, Won 8, Lost 4, Drawn 1, Cancelled 9.

Unfortunately many matches have been cancelled this season, only four matches being played after the Christmas holiday.
This year's XV has combined well as a team and has played some fast, attractive and open rugby. On two occasions the team had to be reorganised owing to members of the side leaving School. The new players quickly settled into their positions and pulled their weight along with the rest. Three of the matches lost were lost only on penalty points and in the four matches after Christmas 88 points were scored and only 11 points were conceded.
I would like to thank Mr. Tate and Mr. Booth for giving up their time to coach the team, and Mr. Rhodes for taking care of the pitches.
Repeat Colours awarded to - Trueman and Lockett
New Colours awarded to - Cooper, Deeley, Smith and Widmore.

Rugby 2nd XV and 3rd XV

2nd XV

Played 15 Won 12 Lost 3 For 262 Against 86

The second team this year had a very successful season, as the above table shows. The only three matches lost were against first teams, and two of them - Normanton and Doncaster Technical - were beaten on the return encounter.

The beginning of the season saw many high scores in our favour, but later, many calls for first team duty weakened the side, and the scores were not as convincing. The newcomers who filled the vacancies, however, showed great promise and enthusiasm, and should form a good basis for next year's teams.

The forwards, often the lighter pack, were well-led by Adamson, and his hooking ensured for the backs a good share of the ball. He was well-supported by Share, Worgan and Linsey, especially in Line-out work, while Snookes, Dyson and Field too, proved great assets.

In the back division, Conway and Parkin combined excellently, and their skilful handling and piercing runs brought many tries. Parkin, being the leading goal-kicker and try-scorer, scored over a hundred points early in the season, and it was a great pity that his partnership with Conway was broken when he was promoted to the first team. Being good half-backs they always had their three-quarters running well, and consequently many tries came from that division, especially from Nye, Bateman and Allan.

3rd XV Report

In their first season, the newly-formed third team had three fixtures.

The first match against Wath was drawn, 11pts each, a match in which Hemsworth were not disgraced.
The second match against Morley G.S. resulted in an easy win for Hemsworth by 26pts to 3.
In the last match against Wath, improvement was shown by Hemsworth, winning by 13 pts to nil.

During this year's athletics season many records have been broken. On Sports Day, Ellen Toulson established three new Senior Girls' records in the 440 yards, Long Jump, and Hop, Step and Jump. Trueman's new record of 10 seconds for the 100 yards sprint was an outstanding achievement, while Smith's 5 ft. 7 in. High Jump raised the standard in this still further.

Price were worthy winner of the Championship Cup with Guest runners-up. The Standards Competition was closely contested but Holgate's all-round strength eventually brought them the Cup.

The boys' athletics teams have enjoyed a fairly successful season so far. Their best performance was their convincing win over Doncaster G.S. and Doncaster Technical School. At this meeting four School records were beaten: Senior High Jump, 5 ft. 10.25ins. by Smith; Senior 220 yds., 21.7 secs. by Trueman; Senior Shot Putt, 41 ft. 7 in. by Snookes; and Intermediate 220 yards 24.5 secs. by Gibson. In their two other meetings the teams have been placed second and third.

I would like to thank all the boys in the teams for their unfailing support during the current season, and to thank Mr. Tate for the work he has done in arranging the athletics matches this year. Many young athletes have come to the fore this season with promising performances. I hope they will continue to improve, and maintain the high standard of competition which Hemsworth Grammar School has always set.
J.C. Smith, Boys' Athletics Captain.

The 1959-60 season has been one of the most successful for many years. The team won 11 matches, drew 1, and lost 3. Throughout the season the team have had only 19 goals scored against them, and have succeeded in scoring 74.

The fact that 7 members of last year's team remained, proved a distinct advantage. The newcomers were J. Hellewell, D. Hughes, G. Picken and T. Cosgrove, who amply filled the vacant positions, and combined well with the rest of the team.

On December 5th the Wakefield and District Hockey Trials were held in Wakefield. The school was represented by N. Carlile, C. Jordan and E. Toulson. Although two of these people were asked to go to further trials, neither was successful in the final selection.

At the end of the Autumn term the traditional Staff v. Girls match was played. The Staff won by 2-1 after a hard, fast game.

The Annual Rally was held at Hemsworth on March 26th. In the first round Hemsworth beat Castleford 2-0, after a somewhat difficult game. They then went on to play Hillam, and won by 2-0. With these two victories Hemsworth gained maximum points on Pitch 1, and went forward to the final. The final was played between Percy Jackson Grammar School and Hemsworth. After a strenuously fast game Hemsworth narrowly defeated the Percy Jackson team by 1-0 after extra time. For the fiist time in the history of the competition, Hemsworth gained possession of the winner's shield.

All members of the team are grateful to Miss Musgrave who has worked with us enthusiastically throughout the season. We also thank Miss Tate, Miss Child, Mrs. Whittaker, Mrs. Williams and Miss Fish for the help they have given with matches and Mr. Rhodes for keeping the pitch in such fine condition.
D. Lumby (Captain).

Boys' Hockey

Played 11. Won 2. Drawn 1. Lost 8.

Although this season has apparently produced disappointing results, it is pleasing to record that, for the first time since boys' hockey was introduced into the school, there have been victories: against West Leeds G.S. (5-2) and Wombwell (3-2). It must be realised that most of the opposing learns have many more years' experience behind them: the school team has only been playing for three years.

Throughout the season the defence, with Guest, Robinson, Wilford and Brettt, R. outstanding, played well and showed good tactical understanding. However, it was lack of combination among the forwards which caused defeat in many matches. This was well illustrated against Percy Jackson's G.S. and against Bootham School.
Next year, we shall unfortunately be losing such strong team men as Guest and Brett, R., but most of the present team will still be available. So, the future prospects are good, especially if there is more support and enthusiasm from the Fourth and Fifth Forms.

Mr. Losasso has devoted a great deal of time in forwarding boys' hockey at the school. On behalf of the team I would like to offer our sincere thanks to him for all that he has done for us.
N. A. Sumpter. (Captain & Secretary)

Hockey 2nd XI

This has been a season of moderate success for the second Hockey XI. We have Played 15 matches, won 10, drawn 2, and lost 3.
The members of the team have striven together to achieve not individual merit, but a team victory. In a team of consistent players, credit must be given to Carol Johns and Janet Marston, whose defensive play has been thoroughly steadfast. Mary Ellis's speed and her selective shots at goal, have enabled her to top the good-scoring list, assisted by the enthusiastic play of the rest of the forward line.

Our success this season has been due not only to good team-work, but to the willingness of Miss Musgrave, Miss Tate, and Miss Child, who have given their valuable time and experience to help coach the players.
S. Parkin (Captain).

Rugby U14s XV

The Under 14's Rugger Team have had a fine season, winning all their eleven matches very convincingly. Their enthusiasm and skill combined with intelligent play have made them the most formidable combination the school has possessed for some time. Although as a team they are not big and strong, they do possess the qualities of fitness and speed and these have produced some outstanding results.

The first game of the season against Nunthorpe G.S. which they won by 24 pts. to 16 revealed them as a team capable of playing hard, relentless open rugby, for the opposition were much bigger and stronger than the Hemsworth team. In successive matches against Wath, Rothwell, Crossley and Porter, Heath, and Spurley Hey the Under 14's ran up some huge scores, often beating their opponents decisively with the simple open game of quick passing, backing one another up, and judicious kicking. In the seccnd half of the season, although they continued to play well, they were not quite so impressive owing to the unfortunate feeling of over-confidence that developed. Consequently they tended to blame one another for mistakes instead of playing that little hit harder to cover up the errors made by their colleagues.

They still have much to learn concerning the finer arts of the game. This is especially true of the forwards who often failed to adapt themselves to the conditions under which they were playing. They must learn to play as a unit in the loose mauls and with more determination and vigour in the line-outs. Amongst the forwards the outstanding individuals were Hannam (20 tries), Hames for his opportunism and goal kicking, Harrow for his line-out work, and Chappell for his efficient hooking of the ball in the tight scrums.

The strength of the team however lies in the backs, where Brocklehurst and Beddows ('Mighty Atom') have performed magnificently. Gibson the captain of the side has not only led his team well but he has been an example both in his attacking and defensive play. In all Gibson scored over 20 tries during the season. Thorpe and Argyle too must he mentioned for their vigorous and sound play throughout the season.

But the efforts of the rest of the team and the reserves who turned out regularly must not he forgotten for they have all contributed to the team's success.

Next season we hope that the team will continue to play hard, open and intelligent rugby and that the successes of this year will spur them on to even greater attainments especially in South Yorkshire and maybe England.

Record-Played 11. Won 11. Points for 404. Points against 58.

Front Row L-R: Margaret Biggs, Winifred Jones, Mary Ellis, Julia Street

At the beginning of the season four players remained from last year's very successful first team. We began the season rather poorly by losing the first two matches, but then we redeemed ourselves by winning several.

Although the Second Six has not experienced much success both teams have enjoyed the matches and look forward to a more rewarding season next year.

The tennis of the School is gradually reaching a higher standard and this, we are sure, is due to the excellent coaching of Miss Musgrave and the continuing interest shown by Mrs. Williams. We would like to extend our thanks to them for giving us confidence, and hope that we shall do them more credit next season.
Carol E. Jordan, Captain.

Results: so far this season, the First Team have won 4 matches and lost 3. Colours have been awarded to Carol Jordan, Dilys Hughes, Dora Lumby and Gwen Cavanagh.

Colts Cricket

After a weak start to the season, the team has blended together and under the captaincy of Tate has played very well. The batting and fielding improved greatly, but bowlers have tended to bowl either too short or off the wicket.

We offer our thanks to Mr. Rhodes for his preparation of the wickets, to Mr. Tate for his organisation and to the girls who have provided us with refreshments.
J.H. Wharton.

Boys' Tennis

This year, the boys' tennis VI have not had a very successful season, having won only one out of the four matches already played. Inspiring tennis has been played at times individually, but the poor results are due to the inabillty of all members of the team to hit their form on the same day. We have been fortunate this year in having a consistent third couple in Brett. D. and Rodgers, on whom we could always rely. Robinson and Hinks, and Brett. R and Sumpter who have shared the first and second couple positions throughout the season, have all played good tennis, though lacking in consistency. However, there are still three matches to be played and we are hoping for more success.

As there are only two members of the team leaving at the end of the year (Brett R. and Rodgers), prospects for next season are quite good.

On behalf of the the team I would like to thank Mr. Owen and Mr. Williams for all the help, encouragement and advice they have given us.
Brett, R. UVIS.

Cricket 1st XI

This season has been one of mixed fortunes so far for the 1st XI who have won 3, drawn 2 and lost 2 of the seven matches played.

The batting has been quite good, but the attack has lacked a third fast bowler to back up the fine performances of Randall and the support of Nuttall who yet needs more experience with the ball. The fielding, however, has been poor; many catches have been dropped and many runs thrown away.

Training nights have been badly supported; many members of the team do not realise how valuable time spent in training can be in the creation of a successful eleven.

Our sincere thanks go to Mr. Sale and Mr. Pacy, our trainer-coachers, to Mr. Rhodes for his care of the wicket, to Wilford, our scorer, to Widmore, our secretary, to the Staff who have umpired so efficiently and to Mrs. Daniels and Mary for the lunches they have prepared.
Morley F., UVIS.
