FIRST XV RUGBY 1961

The First XV this year won eleven, drew two and lost three out of a total of sixteen matches. This is an admirable record, especially when we consider the mitigating factors of fielding much weakened sides because of injury, at Silcoates and Thorne, and in our other defeat at Wath, where we played for most of the game with thirteen men.
An outstanding feature of this year's team has been that it was composed of players with relatively little experience of senior rugby (there were no Colours from last year and only four players had a first team season behind them). Indeed, had there not been so many unfortunate injuries, and not so many of last year's teams been so successful in the academic field, and had there not been so many premature leavers, the mind boggles to think what the record of this year's team would have been.As it was, hard training a fine team spirit, and the many hours devoted by Mr. Tate, Mr. Booth and Mr. Whittaker in coaching the team produced a worthy record, though not as outstanding as that of three seasons ago.

In the actual team itself special mention should be made in the back division, of Albert Parkin, whose deceptive "dummy" and fine bursts of speed brought many tries; and of the excellence of David Sugden at full back, who in his first season in senior rugby obtained reserve position in the Yorkshire County side. No player in the forwards can be singled out, for all played well and as a group, not as individuals. The front row foraged well and always gave good scrum possession, the second row were outstanding in line-out work, while the very mobile back row covered excellently and scored many tries with efficient and speedy backing-up. It was very fitting then that five forwards; Ackroyd, Adamson (Pack Leader), Hinks, Randall(Vice-Captain) and Worgan gained their Colours, while Cuthbert and Parkin were awarded Colours in the backs.

In summing up, it can be said that if such fine team spirit pervades, and such hard training is as consistent next season as this, then the senior rugby in School will be left in very capable hands.
Michael Cuthbert, U6A.

2nd XV RUGBY 1961

Match Record: Played 14, Won 7, Lost 7, Points for, 141, Points against 132.

The second team, as can be seen from the match record, have had only a moderate season. The team, a completely new one, has often been weakened by players being called upon for 1st team duty, and by injuries.

So many changes prevented the team becoming one which could play well together. The pack has been very light, and with players like Colley, Nicoll and Brocklesby often called upon for the first team, the pack has had to be changed around many times. The forwards have often been up against much heavier packs, and although they tried very hard, they were often beaten for possession in both the line-outs and scrums.

The back division were consequently starved of the ball, though on the few occasions when they did get the ball they showed good form. The half-backs played very well together and Woolley ended the season as leading try scorer.

Special praise must be given to Willson, Tate, Chaplin, Nicoll, Woolley and Ward for their outstanding work throughout the season.

3rd XV RUGBY 1961

Match record: Played 6, Won 3, Lost 3, Drawn 0, Points for 74, Points against 33.

In only their second year, the third team had a fairly successful season, and despite frequent unavoidable changes the team played with enthusiasm and zeal which helped to counterbalance their lack of experience. Two of the defeats were by regular 2nd teams and one to a nominal first team. We gained revenge over Barnsley with a fine 23-0 win at home following a 9-3 defeat at Barnsley earlier in the season and we also beat Wath for the second successive time. The highlight of the season was a 23-0 victory over Doncaster Technical School when we completely dominated in a very entertaining match. The few players who played in every match really found their best form, which was a great inspiration to all the other members of the team.

Among those who deserve special mention are the Captain, Pickles, the Pack-leader, Harrison and also Vamplew and Whalley. On the whole the 3rd XV had a fairly successful but most enjoyable season.
Pickles E., L6S.

COLTS RUGBY 1960-61

Match record: Played 15. Won 11, Lost 3, Drawn 1, Points for 319, Points against 72.

The Colts have had a very good season losing only three of their fifteen matches. The matches lost were against:-
Castleford (a) 20-5 points
Thorne (a) 14-3 points
West Leeds (a) 13-8 points.

Perhaps the highlights of the season were victories over Wath (whose team included four South Yorkshire players) by 32-5 points (h), and 36-6 points (a), and over Wakefield Q.E.G.S. (twice by 13-0 points (h) and 16-0 points (a)).

At the beginning of the season the forwards did not play together very well, but after a few positional changes and an introduction of new players, they made a really good pack. In this Eight, Harrow and Thorpe were outstanding both in defence and attack.

The real strength of the team has been in the half-backs and middle-backs, where Brocklehurst, Beddow and Hames have excelled on numerous occasions.
Leading try scorers:- Gibson (14), Hames (13), Brocklehurst (2) and Beddow (8).

Gibson and Brocklehurst both played for South Yorkshire in three games;
against Merseyside (at Rotherham) 14-6;
(v.) Nottingham (a) L. 18-3;
(v.) Leicestershire (at Barnsley) L 11-3 and Gibson captained this team on each occasion.

UNDER 14 XV 1960-61

Match record:- Played 16, Won 11, Lost 2, Drawn 2, Abandoned 1, Points for 287, Points against 90.

Though the promise shown at the beginning of the season has never been fully realised, the Under 14 XV have had a successful season. Only two games have been lost, both to Wakefield.

In defence the team has been strong with reliable performances from Shaw and Moxon at full back, and apart from the lost games, only once have the opposing team scored more than six points. In attack, however, there has generally been too much reliance upon the captain, Johnson, who at stand-off half has been the outstanding member of the side, being responsible for practically half of the points scored this season. This has been more noticeable in the closer games, where there has often been lack of penetration in the centre and an absence of determination on the wings, though against weaker sides this has been less obvious.

The forwards, ably led by Orange, have rarely been overshadowed in spite of heavier opponents. There is plenty of room for improvement in line-out work and greater determination is required in the loose.

At its best, the team has produced rugby which has been a pleasure to watch and promises well for the future.
The following have represented the Under 14 XV:
Johnson, Shaw, Moxon, Moody, Fearnley, Fearnside, Coop, Coope, Edwards, Fairclough, Oxley, Poole, Hancock, King, Bancroft, Mills, Wood, Orange, Byrom, Hryscho, Fowler, Hudson, Squires, Dawson.

UNDER 13 XV 1960-61

The Under 13 XV had a very successful season, losing only one of their 16 matches. Twelve were won and three drawn.

In the forwards, Osborne, Fisher and Shelley were outstanding, with Baxendale and Bashforth giving strong support. Stone, the full back, played very well throughout the season and helped to keep the points scored against Hemsworth to a minimum. In the three-quarters, Abbott and Howey were the leading try-scorers, while Abbott was also successful as a goal-kicker.

Hemsworth scored a total of 190 points and conceded only 40.

UNDER 12 XV 1960-61

The Under 12 Rugby team had a fairly successful season, winning four of their seven matches. They suffered three heavy defeats, however, by Normanton (twice), and by Doncaster. This accounted for their poor points record of 80 points against, while only 38 points were scored.

The team showed promise, especially the backs, but the forwards were slow to settle down and work together as a pack. As is usual in this team, as many boys as possible were given an opportunity of playing, and 23 boys played during the season. The team was playing much better towards the end of the winter, and should do well next season.

On the whole the U.15 XI have had a rather disappointing season, losing seven of their eight matches and drawing the eighth. From time to time, one or two members of the team were required to play for the second XI and this resulted in a very unsettled U.15 team. Owing to these constant changes, the standard of co-ordination needed in the team was not acquired.
Even though results were discouraging they continued to play enthusiastically and their eagerness never faltered. Improvements were shown during the season, the last match resulting in a draw.

The season opened with a match at Woodhouse G.S. This was a very close contest which our School eventually won by 133 points to 129.
The next athletics event was Sports Day. Guest House were once again the victors, with Price House second, Holgate third and Talbot fourth. This year four records were broken. Perhaps the most notable of these was the performance of the Holgate Boys' Senior Relay Team which recorded the excellent time of 47.5 seconds.
The second athletics match in which we were the hosts, was a triangular one between Castleford G.S., King's School, Pontefract and ourselves. This year we were the winners by 270 points to Castleford's 239, and Pontefract's 222.
The third match of the year was another triangular one, but this time between Percy Jackson's G.S., who were the hosts, Thorne G.S., and ourselves. First in this competition was Thorne with 191 points, second was Percy Jackson's with 168, and we came third with 154 points.
Then came what must surely be the highlight of the year, the Yorkshire Championships. This year was one of the most successful for the Ackworth Association and indeed, ourselves. Mills won the Junior Boys' Hop, Step and Jump; and in the Intermediate Boys' Relay, Allen and Parkin represented Hemsworth in the Ackworth Association's victorious team. Several other Athletes from our School and the Association gained places within the first six in their respective events.
It is to be hoped that by the time the magazine is published, our results in the Huddersfield Sports will have justified the hard work of all the School's Athletes.
Thanks are due once again to Mr. Tate and Mr. Jakes for the valuable coaching they have given the individual members of the team, and for the great enthusiasm they have shown for the Athletics Team as a whole.

Girls' Athletics

In this year's School Sports the Junior and Intermediate girls showed great keenness, but the lack of enthusiasm present among the Seniors for some years has persisted. Price House girls outshone the opposing Houses in the Standards Competition by winning all sections. Eight girls have been elected to represent the Ackworth Area in the Yorkshire Schools Championships. We hope to take part in an Athletics meeting against Pontefract Girls' High School in July.

Matches Played 12, Won 7, Lost 4, Drawn 1.
The hockey played by the 1st XI has been of a high standard, the defence combining well together and the forwards passing the ball wisely between them. As a result the attack has been excellent, scoring 49 goals and only conceding 18 goals. Team spirit and enthusiasm has been excellent and deserves special mention.

Unfortunately the 2nd XI has had only one victory this season, this being due mainly to their failure to attend practices and to lack of enthusiasm. The juniors have shown great interest, and an U.14 XI was formed at the end of the season. Their enthusiasm is a promising sign of future success.
