BOYS' ATHLETICS 1962
Up to the time of writing, this season has been the best ever. This was only to be expected since most of last year's team remained. All the matches this year have been away, and once again we have met with last season's bogeys-difficulties of organisation and lack of facilities.
The first match of the season however was a most enjoyable new fixture for the seniors against Swinton Day Training College. We proved to be more than a match for the men and won easily. Richard Bateman did well in the cold conditions to set a School's best performance in the Senior Pole Vault with 10 feet 3 inches.
The whole athletics team competed against Woodhouse G.S. and Sheffield City G.S. We won this match more easily than last year. The most notable performance was by Woodhouse's John Harston, the All-England Schools' Discus Champion, whose discus throw was better than the existing Yorkshire record. There were two good performances by our own athletes : Geoffrey Allen equalled the school 100 yards record of 10 seconds; and David McKenzie set a best performance in the Senior Shot with a put of 49 feet 10 inches.
In spite of having to field a weaker team against Castleford G. S. and Pontefract K. S. the boys won a close contest. Promise was shown by 15 year old John Byrom who did 4 minutes 54 seconds in the mile. As a result of this match, several boys have been picked to represent the Ackworth Association in the Yorkshire Schools' Championships.
The next event was Sports Day. The weather was excellent and so were many of the performances, since eleven new records were set up-seven by the boys. Holgate deservedly won this year, but were closely followed by Guest, Talbot being third and Price fourth. Once again the Holgate senior boys' relay team broke the 4x110 record with a time of 46.9 seconds. Andrew Coope (Holgate) was the outstanding athlete. He won the Junior Victor Ludorum and broke two records. Special mention should be made of Melvyn Midgley (Holgate) who, in only his fifth year at School carried off both Senior sprint titles. If these two athletes develop the talent which they are now showing, great promise is held for the future.
Thanks are again due to Mr. Crompton and Mr. Jakes for the enthusiasm they have shown for the boys' team. Special thanks go to Mr. Tate for his coaching of all the School's athletes, for his never-failing enthusiasm and for his consistently good organisation of Sports Day.
If the hitherto unknown talent shown by some pupils this year is carefully developed, not only in the summer months, but also by weight training in the close season, the future of athletics at Hemsworth Grammar School will be very secure.

So far this year the Tennis teams have not been very successful and match results have been disappointing. Practices have been difficult for not only are two courts out of action but the weather has spoilt both practices and matches. Already two matches have been cancelled and two other matches were played in heavy drizzle under grey skies. However practices have been well attended not only by team member but by other girls who are keen on improving their play.
This year two Singles Tennis Tournaments have been organized, one for Senior girls and the other for Junior girls, and we look forward to hearing the results of these later in the term.

Boys Hockey XI
We have had a successful season, winning six out of the ten matches played. In spite of the illness of our captain and best player, Brett, at the beginning of the season, we have achieved a reasonable standard of hockey. Farrar, the goalkeeper, has improved considerably since the beginning of the season, and is to be congratulated on his efforts. Once their positional play developed, the backs proved quite strong, while the half-backs provided a powerful thrust through the middle, though there have been tendencies towards over-individualistic play. As the forward line gained experience in playing together, its strength and accuracy increased.
The team has worked hard and loyally. Our thanks must go to Mr. Owen and Mr. Butler for giving up their time to allow us to benefit from their experience. I hope that their efforts have been rewarded, and that the improvement shown by the team this year will be maintained in future seasons.

Girls Hockey Under 13 XI
The under 13 team have had a fair season, winning two of the four matches they played. The result of the first match was disappointing for we lost to Don Valley High School by 7 goals to nil. Our second match was not as disappointing, Rothwell won 2-0. The third match we played was much more encouraging, for we beat Rothwell by 2-1. The goals were scored by J. Jones and L. Hall. Our last match of the season was played well, for the players worked together as a team. We won the match against Don Valley HS 4-1. Goals were scored by J. McClure, J. Peace and J. Jones(2).
Although we have had only four matches this season, the U13 team have been very keen and enthusiastic. Practices have been held regularly and have been well-attended. As this is only our second season of hockey we were pleased with the results of the last two matches.
J.A. Jones (captain)
Girls Hockey Under 15 XI
The under 15 team have had a very successful season losing only one of the eleven matches played. In all, 24 goals have been scored for the team, and 10 goals against.
At first the team was a little unsure and drew against Don Valley HS and Ackworth. Later, as the team began to settle down, the scores improved and we had victories against Thornes House GS and Goole. After Christmas we were unfortunate in losing two of our players who were promoted to the 1st X1. (Pat and Jean Kilvington). Unfortunately the team became rather unsettled but improved after some rearrangements, and won the last five matches.
Several inter-school matches have been played this season. We played a representative team of the Colts XV on two occasions losing the first 2-1 (after extra time!) and drawing the second match 1-1. We have also played the first X1 losing 2-1, and a combined team of Mistresses and U13 X1 players winning this match by 1-0.
Our thanks go to Miss Jennings for her help and encouragement, to the other members of Staff who have helped us, and to Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitches.
Jennifer Swift (Captain)
Girls First XI Hockey
This season has not been very successful. We have won only 3 matches, drawn 3 and lost 9.
It is significant, however, that there has been a tremendous improvement throughout the year. Only three members of the 1960-61 team remained, which meant that there had to be a total reconstruction of the team. The lack of enthusiasm among some of the senior members of the School created a further problem as the 1st XI members had, in the main, to be drawn from the Fifth and Middle Forms of the School. Yet once the team had been chosen, conscientious work and determination helped to overcome the lack of experience.
The forward line and backs have greatly improved throughout the season. Lynne Cartledge, the goalkeeper, has played really well against the most difficult opposition. Special mention should be made of Linda Birch and Jacqueline Leonard without whose intelligence and skill the team would never have been able to improve so much.
T. Cosgrove (captain) (Guest)

Rugby - Captain of England
Captain of England
After a tiring six-hour journey, I finally reached Cardiff early on a Thursday Evening (1962). I was met at the station and taken to a big hotel where we were to assemble as a team before being sent off with our hosts.
The following day we met again at the Queen's Hotel and walked up to Blackweir through the Castle grounds for a training session. For an hour and a half we worked together as a team for the first time. It was my job, as captain, to get to know everybody, and as the day went by I was very happy to feel the development of a wonderful team spirit.
Lunch was arranged for us at a local school, after which we were scheduled for a tour of the Rhondda Valley; however, the smallpox outbreak precluded this. Instead, we visited Llandaff Cathedral, where we saw Epstein's famous 'Christ', and afterwards we were turned loose on Barry sands to play football. Back in Cardiff, we went to the famous Empire Pool, were shown all round the building, and spent a few minutes in the water.
We had tea in the Grand Hotel, where we were both surprised and pleased to see Mr. Acker Bilk booking in. One of the team asked him for his autograph, and we chatted to him for a few minutes. Now I began to fear that I might have to make a speech after tea, but our guide, Mr. Risdale, spared me this. We dispersed with our hosts; mine was the Welsh second-row Ian Myhre, and I was treated with generous hospitality.
Friday night : early to bed, ready for the big day.
The day of the match arrived and we assembled with our kit at the Queen's Hotel. Everybody was very nervous. We were taken down to the famous Cardiff Arms Park to leave our kit and look around for about half an hour. It was fabulous. Lunch with the Lord Mayor of Cardiff followed, though because of the game I ate little. Nervous and excited, we returned to the ground to strip before going out on to the cricket field behind the stands to be photographed. We all looked very smart as we lined up to march out.
When I got out of the tunnel leading the England team, a cold shiver ran down my spine. This was the biggest thrill of my life; even the crowd of 14,000 was dwarfed by the vast ground. After lining up in the middle of the field for the two National Anthems we prepared ourselves for 70 minutes' hard rugby. From the kick-off the pace was very fast, and never changed.
In the early stages of a good hard game neither team got the better of the other. Then, quite out of the blue, the Welsh swung into the attack and never looked back in the first half. They deservedly led at the interval, five points to nil. After a tactics talk from our trainer, we started the second half determined to win back those five points. We pressed and pressed the Welsh, but they defended magnificently, stopping us twice about a yard from the line. We tried everything, but failed to score, and when the final whistle went the crowd clapped us off the field. This, we were told, was a great honour, not accorded to every English team.
The presentation of the International Caps took place at the Queen's Hotel. This was the first chance I had of seeing my parents, though I had little time to speak to them after the presentation as we had to dash to the big dinner. There I heard the bad news- I had to make a speech. However, I was saved by Mr. Tate who wrote one out for me.
So, the great match was over. We dispersed with our hosts for the last time, and prepared for the journey home.

The fielding has improved a great deal since last season, and the experienced First Team players have set a good example to the few newcomers. Won 16. Lost 3. Drawn 1. Points for 369. Against 88. The Colts have had a very successful season, losing only three of their 20 matches. In defence the team has been strong with reliable performances by Shaw at full-back. In attack Coope and Fearnside have been outstanding, and Fearnside's deceptive 'dummy' and fine bursts of speed have brought many tries for himself and Coope, who was the leading try scorer this season. The forwards, ably led by King, and a considerable improvement on last year's pack, have rarely been overshadowed in spite of heavier opponents. Special mention should he made of King, Poole, Dawson, Coope and Mills whose line-out jumping has been consistent throughout the season. Mills, Coope and Johnson have played for South Yorkshire in four games, against Leicestershiie (Lost 6-0, away), against Nottinghamshire (Won 21-0 at Sheffield), against Merseyside (Lost 23-5, away) and against Lincolnshire (Won 6-3, at Doncaster. Hancock, the hooker, was brought in to play for South Yorkshire against Lincoinshire. At its best the team has produced rugby as it should he played, open and fast. When they take the big step up into senior rugby next year, I am sure they will uphold the school's high reputation K. Johnson (Captain) | |
| Under 12 Rugby | |
| Record Played 9. Won 4. Lost 4. Drawn 1. The under 12 XV have played nine matches and, as one would expect, have gained valuable experience. Each game played was an improvement on the previous one. By the end of the season they were playing very well indeed though the practice of running back into a ruck of players instead of moving the ball along the threequarters still occurred too frequently. Sometimes there have been thirty players at Thursday practices, which indicates the enthusiasm of the team members and reserves. This should ensure continued success next year. | |
| Under 13 Rugby | |
| Record Played 13. Won 5. Lost 5. Points for 193. Against 116. The Under 13 Rugby team had a fairly successful season, and won 8 of the 13 matches played. A disappointing feature of the season was the large number of fixtures which had to be cancelled because of weather conditions or the inability of some schools to field teams. At the beginning of the season the team relied upon the forwards to score points, but towards the end of the season the backs improved a great deal, and the season ended with a fine 31-0 win against High Storrs G.S., when every member of the side showed his best form. If this progress can be maintained, we look forward to even better results next season, and in particular, we hope to avenge the heavy defeats inflicted on us by Normanton G.S. and Nunthorpe G.S. | |
| Under 14 Rugby | |
| Record: Played 15. Won 14. Lost 4. In the early and middle part of the season, we had a run of victories, and won our first 14 games. In the last six weeks, however, we lost three out of four matches. conceding 36 points and scoring only 5. Our most convincing victories were against Spurley Hey and Ossett, whom we defeated 57-0 and 50-0 respectively. The side was weakened when the winger, Cooper, broke his collar bone and was unable to play for the rest of the season. The leading try-scorers were Shelley and Fisher. Cooper had scored about six tries before his injury. Though a much smaller side than most of our opponents, we won matches with speed of both the forwards and backs, and good passing and tackling. | |
| 2nd XI Hockey | |
| The 2nd Xl have not had a very successful season. Only two of last year's team remained and the team has been unsettled for some of the season. This has been noticeable especially in the forward line where the players showed a marked inability to score. The unfavourable weather resulted in mid-season match and practice cancellations and this did little to boost enthusiasm or improve teamwork. Some improvement has been shown towards the end of the season and was rewarded with a 13-0 victory in the final match. We would like to thank Miss. Musgrave for training the team, the staff who have assisted with the umpiring of matches, and the ground staff for keeping the pitches in such good conditon. J. Davies (Captain) | |
| Rugby First XV | |
| The 1st XV has had a busy season this year and has maintained a high standard throughout. Sixteen matches were played against schools, two against Old Hilmians three seven-a-side competitions were entered and the school had six representatives in the South Yorkshire under nineteen, and one in the Yorkshire Schoolboys final trial. In addition, a fine new set of rugger shirts was obtained after the sale of a collection of waste paper and raffle tickets for a huge iced cake given by Mrs. Street. The season's record is as follows: Played 16, Won 13, Lost 3, Points for 321, Against 38. The outstanding tackling and kicking of Sugden, the full back, the strong tackling of the three-quarters, and the efficiency and doggedness of the breakaways made for an excellent defensive record. Many fine tries came from the half-hacks, Bateman and Parkin, whilst the latter's goal-kicking brought many points. In the threequarters much use was made of the speed of Jones and Allen, and it was a fitting mark of fine service to the 1st XV that Allen was leading try-scorer with some thirteen tries. It was a great misfortune that Worgan, the pack leader, was injured for most of the season. His size and experience would have been a great asset to a somewhat light pack, as he showed early in the season. Williamson, however, did a fine job in his stead, and had excellent support from two experienced props, Chaplin and McKenzie. From Nuttall whose hooking was outstanding, and from the very mobile back row - Newitt, Colley and Linsey. Michael Cuthbert, UVIA | |
| 2nd XV Rugby Report | |
| Of their 20 matches played, the 2nd XV won 10, lost 8 and drew 2. Five other matches were cancelled. Confronted by these figures one would assume that the team had a moderate season. However, half of these matches were played against 1st XVs and some of the defeats they inflicted were narrow. The only serious defeats were against Normanton 1st XV and Thornes House 1st XV, but against the other 1st XVs they held their own, and in some cases were unfortunate in losing. The team was, however, with two exceptions, superior to other 2nd XVs. Their best win was most assuredly against the Hostel of the Resurrection, Leeds University, a side far heavier and older, but the 2nd XV dominated the game with fast, open rugby and won 43-0, their highest score of the season. The points for, were 245, with 177 against, but taking into consideration that the two serious defeats mentioned above accounted for 81 points one can conclude that the 2nd XV had a very successful season. Throughout the season the form of the team was consistently high and although every member played well some were outstanding. Vamplew proved to be a very capable pack-leader, always getting that little extra effort from the forwards. The most outstanding forward was definitely Clay, who proved a menace to every opposing side with his breaks from the scrums. Midgley had a fine season on the wing and Whalley proved invaluable as a goal-kicker. On this form, replacements for next season's 1st XV will not prove too difficult to find. P. G. Weston, UVIA, Captain | |
| 3rd XV Rugby Report | |
| The team has suffered from lack of opposition this season, and consequently has been called upon to play against 2nd and 1st fifteens. Moreover the team has often been considerably weakened by calls to 2nd team duties. We were at out best when when we met Don Valley High School XV and lost narrowly by 9 points to 11. During the season Bashforth has proved a valuable forward and Benson has given good service from the scrum base. All members are to be congratulated on their play throughout the season. Record : Played 6. Won 2. Lost 4. Points for 82 Against 40. Cooper, P., LVIS | |
