Sport 1964-65

Wembley

On March 13th a party of about thirty hockey enthusiasts with three members of staff set off from Hemsworth for Wembley. The object of the journey was to see the international match of England versus South Africa. Our trip was all the more exciting for we were to see Ellen Toulson (photo above), a former pupil of the school, playing centre-forward for England. This was a superb achievement for Ellen's first season in International Hockey and everyone was extremely proud of her.

Adorned with rosettes and the letters ELLEN FOR ENGLAND we found our seats and contributed to the "heavenly" sound of 60,000 female voices in the customary community singing. I'm sure one of our greatest memories from that day will be of Ellen marching on to the field with the other England players. The game was a fast and exciting one with South Africa scoring the first goal. To our delight Ellen equalised with a breathtaking goal. This really made our day complete. South Africa eventually won the match 3-1, though they never monopolized the play.

The journey back into London from the stadium was rather hectic, Mr. Bingley's bus being used as beauty parlour cum hairdresser's with combined tea-room. Once in the city we divided into several groups. We each went our respective ways for a meal before meting up once more at the Palace Theatre. Here we were to see "The Sound of Music". This was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone even though our seats in the "gods" could have been more comfortable. Seven children in the show especially delighted the audience who watched with rapt interest. All too soon the curtain was brought down.

After a final look at London through the windows of a coffee bar we set off back to Hemsworth, arriving at our destination at 5-30 a.m. The day had been a memorable one in our lives. We would like to thank Miss. Alliott for the trouble she took in arranging the excursion and for making it so enjoyable.

This year's first XI has had quite a successful season, conceding defeat only three times. The team have played well together, due largely to its stability, the members having remained the same throughout the season. We were fortunate in having five of last season's first XI still in the side, and on this basis the team was built, with players moving up from the second XI and in two cases straight from the under-fifteens. The latter were Jennifer Jones at centre-forward, and Chris Griffiths at right half. Both have played extremely well, Jenny being our leading goal scorer.

At the beginning of the year we were in the somewhat unusual and rather awkward position of having three good backs. However, the difficulty was solved when Kath Lowe showed herself equally competent on the right wing, leaving Jean Kilvington and Denise Sell as backs. These two, together with the halves - Jenny Swift, Dianne Sell and Chris Griffiths, not forgetting of course our goalkeeper, Pat Kilvington have all done an excellent job in defending the Hemsworth net, shown by the fact that the team has conceded only 8 goals all season.

At first the forwards were a little hesitant in the circle, but later they gained more confidence and we were able to develop better coordination between forwards and halves, and our scores improved accordingly. Mention has alreadv been made of Jenny Jones and Kath Lowe, but the left half of the field has been equally strong, with Angela Deighton and Kath Appleton cooperating to baffle the defence.

Earlier in the year three players, Jean and Pat Kilvington and myself were selected for the Wakefield and District teams, an achievement which serves to illustrate the general standard of play and the enthusiasm of the team.

The keenness of all the teams this season was best shown by the faithful attendance of reserves who were really worthy of a place but to whom we were not able to give a regular place. These reserves, Chris Longfield, Anna Nye, Kath Byra, Pat Rhodes and Janet Wilkinson, were called upon to play any position from goalkeeper to centre-forward in either the first or second XI, and this they did admirably.

Denise Sell deservedly received new colours; her play this season has improved outstandingly. At the end of the season the team was playing well together, thanks to the excellent coaching of Miss. Alliott, and since next year, only three or four players will have left, the first XI should, with the same keenness, have even more success.

Colours: Re-awarded to Jean Kilvington, Ruth Horn.

Reshuffling of some of Hemsworth Grammar School's 1st XI forwards in their away hockey match with Don Valley High School on Saturday seemed to work successfully, for the team won 4-1. Hemsworth's centre forward Jennifer Jones had a good game, scoring the first two goals, one from a solo run after the centre bully-off, and the other after being well backed up by her inside forwards. Right inner S. Holder scored the third goal from a rebound shot by left inner A. Vamplew.

The Hemsworth defence moved very smoothly into action throughout the game, giving Don Valley few opportunities to enter the shooting.

So far this year, the Girls' Tennis teams have not been very successful and match results have been disappointing. The windy weather has hampered both practices and matches, and the intervening examinations have also taken their toll. This year, there has been an Under 15 team, and all players have shown great enthusiasm. After a shaky start, the 1st Team has at last become stabilised, and we look forward to much better results in the few remaining weeks of term.

On behalf of all the girls who have p1ayed tennis this season, I should like to thank Misses Alliott, Tate and Williams for all the support and encouragement they have given to the teams. I shall look forward to hearing of a very successful season for the Girls' Tennis teams of 1966.

Played 20. Won 18. Lost 2. Points for 402. Points against 102.

The First XV has had an excellent season, winning 16 of the 18 matches, suffering defeat at the hands of Pontefract King's School and Wath G.S., and, throughout the season, scoring 391 points against 97 points. Hudson was leading try scorer with 19, then came Coop and Coope with 10 each. The most memorable victory of the season was undoubtedly against Heath in which fine open rugby was played in very bad conditions. Dawson had an excellent season and was definitely the mainstay of the small but mobile pack; only injury robbed him of his place in the Sevens team. Hryschko was a very reliable, hard tackling, loose forward.

It was the possession provided by Dawson in the line-outs and Orange in the set scrums that enabled the formidable threequarters to combine. Coop, Coope, Fearnside and Hudson were prominent in many raids and Stone and Marston were always reliable in defence, and it was from the threequarters that most of the points came.

We had nine of the first XV in the South Yorkshire Under-nineteen XV versus Lincolnshiire and Derbyshire, and the Hemsworth contingent managed the extraordinary feat of scoring 67 points out of a total of 70 points scored. From there Coope, Fearnside and Johnson went forward to play for Yorkshire against Lancashire and Wales.

For the first time in the school's history the first XV went on a two match tour of London. We were successful in both matches, beating Sit William Ellis School by 16 pts. to 5, and Harrow County Grammar School by 17 pts. to nil. Although in the Welsh sevens at Llanelli we were beaten in the first round by Heath, at the Ilkley Sevens we reached the semi-final, losing to the eventual winners, Leeds G.S. At Bridlington we were knocked out in the second round by Normanton. Yet, I feel that with a few more tactical moves we could have done much better.

I wish all the members of the first XV who are leaving, all the best in their future rugby careers, and to the players who are staying on I give my best wishes for a successful season next year.
Johnson, K. L.6.A.

Rugby Second XV

Once again the second XV had a verv successful season, winning 13 of the 15 games. Although several players have been called upon occasionally for first team duty, reserves have more than adequately filled the vacant places.

The strong, speedy running of the backs has been a main feature of most games, and the mobile and well-drilled pack has rarely been matched in loose or in tight play.

However, the fly-half, has been the springboard for most of the back play, and, apart from scoring tries himself has created many chances for his threes. Moxon, the hooker, has seldom been beaten to possession, while Stevens and Fradgely have done a lot of good work in the line-outs.

However, despite the ability of one or two players, the success has been essentiallv that of the team as a whole. Moreover, with several players staying on at school, the auguries for next season are very good.

Rugby Colts XV

The Colts began the season well and showed much ability in their efforts to play as a drilled team. In their first three matches the team scored 129 points against 9 points. One of the matches was a memorable one for Malkin who scored six tries. In the fourth match of the season seven of the team were playing for the South Yorkshire Schools and the team went down for its heaviest defeat of the season, 49 points to nil against Castleford G.S.

In our matches before Christmas, Lunn and Marks were outstanding in the forwards and were well backed up by Bailey and Standish. Wrigglesworth jumped well in the line-outs and Horobin tackled well. Baugh, at hooker, gave us a fair amount of the ball from the set scrums and Ward worked well in the loose. Half-backs Marston and Mills were of valuable service to the threequarters. Centres Rooker and Malkin ran strongly and wingers Reid and Newton scored good tries. The full back position was a tough spot to fill and it was not until half way through the season that Jones, T. became the regular number 15. His tackling and kicking to touch were both effective.

Although snow delayed practice, the team settled down well again and retained the shield for Hemsworth in the Sheffield nine-a-side tournament. Our only defeats after Christmas came from Goole and Leeds G.S.

At the end of the season the team was invited to play in a sevens tournament at Llanelli. We reached the last sixteen but were unluckily beaten in the next round after extra time. All the team played well and thus no-one stood out.

The under-fifteen XV has had a hard season in which the spirit of the players has helped greatly. Seven of the team gained higher honours and played for the South Yorkshire under-fifteen side. Mills was captain and others were Marston, B.; Jones, A.; Jones, T.; Marks, N.; Lunn, R. Three boys, Marks, Malkin and Mills went further and Malkin reached the final England trial. Although he didn't manage the England XV he is to be congratulated on his achievements throughout the season.

The team would like to thank Mr. Shelton and Mr. Wilkinson for their help in training, and improving the game.
Mills, T. J. Captain

"B" Team: Played 2, Won 2, Lost 0

The 'A Team again had a successful season under Wainwright's captaincy. The team played excellent rugby all season and should be a formidable side next year when they will have gained weight and height. Nichols played exceptionally well and the rest of the pack were encouraged to follow his example. Jones and Wainwright gave the backs plenty of the ball and by the end of the season all the threequarters were running and handling well.

We were able to organise two matches for a "B" team made up of very keen reserves. Without these boys it keep the "A" team on their toes, and to give opposition in practices, progress would have been much slower and more difficult to achieve.

Again this year, the second XI enjoyed a very successful season, losing only one of its 14 matches. We scored a total of 66 goals which indicates the way in which the whole team worked together.

Throughout the season there was only one instance when the defence was stretched to breaking point, this being at Barnsley High School when Hemsworth eventually lost in the dying minutes by the odd goal from seven. However, it must be pointed out that the team was not at full strength on that occasion, but the defeat did not detract from the enjoyment of the match and we were sorry when a return match was rendered impossible by the excursion to Wembley.

The defence - A. Parkes. C. Millthorpe, P. Ogley - must therefore be congratulated on their consistently good play, and mention must also be made of the half-backs - M. Beaumont, J. Walker, M. Wigham - who supported the forwards - E. Hayward, S. Holder, A.Turner, A. Vamplew, S. Wren in every way possible. Even though the latter lacked the necessary coordination at the beginning of the season, due to the fact that they had not played together before, they soon became used to one another's style of play, as can be seen by the number of goals scored. Twelve of the goals were scored in one match.

I should like to thank the team for the support they have given this season, the reserves who have turned up for matches knowing that they might not have a chance to play, and I hope that next year the second XI has an equally enjoyable and successful season.

The team has had a very successful season, playing 13 matches, winning ten and drawing three. The team scored 56 goals and conceded only 9. The leading goal scorer was C. Wood who scored over half of our goals.

In the Hockey Rally the team played excellently, losing only in the Final to Rothwell G.S.

Our special thanks go to Miss Jennings who has helped and encouraged us throughout the season. We should also like to thank other members of staff who have helped us and also Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitches.

Hockey Under 14 XI

The team has had only four matches this season. We won two, drew one and lost one. The leading scorer was Anne Mathers with seven. We have scored 19 goals and conceded six.

Thanks are given to Miss. Alliott and Miss. Jennings for their coaching and enthusiastic support of the team throughout the season.

Boys' Hockey

The Boys' Hockey XI has shown much improved form, and there is no doubt that this has been the best season in the comparatively short history of hoys' hockey at H.G.S. Out of eleven fixtures played, five were won, three were drawn and three were lost, and a total of 29 goals were scored for the team as compared with 21 goals against. Although several of the more experienced players are leaving school this year I am convinced that with more support from the Fourth and Fifth forms this excellent record can not only be continued but improved upon.

On behalf of the team I should like to offer our sincere thanks to Messrs. Murray, Warren and Owen for their help in coaching and umpiring - it has been greatly appreciated.

Girls' Athletics 1964-65

Sports Day 1964 produced several new records and many good performances among the girls. In the Juniors' section, Angela May's achievement of two new records, in the 100 and 150 yards, is outstanding. P. Lockwood, also a Junior, equalled Anne Parkes' record of 4' 1/2" in the high jump, and had a best performance of 4' 2" in the Triangular Match at Castleford.

Among the Intermediates, Marrion Pearson set up new records in the javelin and 100 yards, and also won the 150 yards (new event) and the long jump. In the Intermediate Girls' Shot, also a new event, Lyn Crossland came first with a putt of 24'.

Dianne Sell was the only Senior Girl to set a new record, with a throw of 86' 9" in the Discus. Two new events, the Shot and the 880 yards were won by Linda Hopkinson (25' 5 1/2") and Ruth Horn (2 mm. 44.4 secs.) respectively.

Price House were able to clinch new records jn the Intermediate and Senior sections (56.8 secs. and 55.8 secs.) and now hold records for the Relay in all three age-groups.

After Sports Day came the Inter-Schools Sports at Huddersfield where good performances throughout the Girls' team gave us the Senior Girls' Trophy and runners-up position in the Intermediate group. The Juniors mostly drawn from First-forms were unable to conquer much older opposition, despite enthusiastic and creditable performances.

This season 8 girls have been chosen to attend the County Sports as a result of a Triangular Match with Castleford and Pontefract. The most notable performances of the match were Marrion Pearson's javelin throw of 107' 4" and Jacqueline Winder's long jump of 14' 10 1/2".

We hope that these and other best performances will be equalled and bettered at the Sports, and look forward to more success at the 1965 School and Huddersfield Sports.

In hoping for success however, it is regretful that Hemsworth Grammar School still lacks an adequate cinder run-up for the long jump, and an improved or second high-jump area. These would almost certainly result in many better performances throughout. the school.

Boys' Athletics

Last year's Sports Day proved to be most successful from the point of view of the Boy's Athletics, five new records being established. New records were attained in the following events:- the Junior Boys' high jump; the Boys' (U.12) Throwing the cricket ball; the Junior Boys' Shot; the Junior Boys' 440 yards and the lntermediate Boys' relay. Price House were the eventual winners.
The success of Sports Day was followed by further success at the Huddersfield Sports. The Senior Boys managed to win the Senior Boys' Shield while the overall position of the Boys' team was third, beaten only by Colne Valley and Normanton.

Special mention must be made of the achievement of Brian Hawkes in the 1964 Yorkshire Schools' Championships. In his first 2000 metres Steeplechase he managed to obtain third place, a truly commendable performance.

Up to the time of writing, this season has been a little disappointing. This was only to he expected since most of last year's senior team left school. All the matches this year have been away and out of the four matches in which Hemsworth has competed, there has only been a single win.

Defeats were suffered at the hands of Normanton G.S., Thorne G.S., Percy Jackson G.S. and Pontefract K.S. The Hemsworth victory was recorded at Leeds against Leeds G.S.; Roundhay G.S.; Doncaster G.S. and Allerton Grange (Bradford). A second victory could have been recorded at Thorne but for a very bad baton change by the Intermediate Relay team.

Promise has been shown throughout the year by Nicholls who has set up new school best performances in the U.13 shot, the U.13 Triple Jump and the U.13 discus. Best performances have also been achieved by Watson in the U.13 javelin and by Wrigglesworth in the U.15 discus.

As a result of the meeting against Ackworth School, Castleford G.S. and Pontefract K.S. several boys have been chosen to represent the Ackworth Association in the Yorkshire Schools' Championships.

Thanks are due to Mr. Connolly and Mr. Howdle for the enthusiasm they have shown throughout the year and to Mr. Wilkinson whose work is well appreciated.

The promise shown by the athletes of the junior part of the school has been most encouraging and it is generally believed that the standard of athletics at H.G.S. will still remain high in the years to come. The facilities at H.G.S., however, still leave much to be desired. It seems unbelievable that in this day and age when most schools possess a cinder track that H.G.S. is still without cinder approaches to the jumping pits, but it is hoped that will soon be rectified.
J.H. Byrom. Boys' Athletics Captain

Boys' Tennis

This year the boys' tennis team has been the strongest for several years, losing only one player from last year's team. This has been shown by the successful record shown this season, losing only one of the four matches played so far. One match not included in this is the staff match, the result of which I forget for the moment! I think if we play them again later in the season however, we will regain a little of our reputation.

Practices have been extremely difficult, one court being out of action, and the girls' practices taking up the greater part of the week. We were thus limited to one practice a week, the remainder of our games period being spent on the courts at Vale Head Park. On the whole the practices have been well attended both by team members and by other boys who were keen on improving their play. This increased enthusiasm has enabled us to field two teams plus an under fifteen team for several matches.

A singles tournament has been organised for senior boys, and we look forward to hearing these results later in the season. We also hope to play the girls' first and second teams later in the season and this promises to be an enjoyable match.

I am certain that with increased support next season, boys' tennis in the school will take a higher role than it does at present, and I hope that it will one day join, if not oust, the first cricket XI from its present prominent position.

On behalf of the teams I should like to thank Mr. Owen, Mr. Murray, Mr. Warren and Mr. Pacy for their coaching and for the interest and help they have given the teams. I wish all concerned with the teams every success next year.
Geoff. Thompson. Captain
