1st XI Hockey Report

Above: Jennifer Jones scores the winning goal.

For the first time in many years Hemsworth have had an almost completely successful season, losing only one match throughout. It must be noted, however, that the excellent standard was maintained not only by the enthusiastic members of the first team but also by those of the second. Play in both teams was so similar in standard that members could be readily interchanged, as was discovered half way through the season when alterations were made, resulting in the team below-.
GK Sheila Radlord
RB Jean Kilvington
LB Anne Parkes
RH Marion Pearson
CH Dianne Sell (Vice-Capt.)
LH Jenny Swift
RW Sue Holder
RI Kath Lowe (Capt.)
CF Jenny Jones
LI Chris Giiffiths
LW Sue Wren
These players went on to win the Hockey Rally on the 5th March. On this day all our worries about an unco-ordinated forward line proved groundless. Although the first game was slow and below standard, play quickly improved and the 1st XI showed all their skill and fitness in the final game against Percy Jackson's, when Jenny Jones scored the only goal of the match, from a rebound from a shot from Dianne Sell.

The general high standard of play became apparent when two of our members were selected for the Wakefield and District hockey team (Dianne Sell and Jean Kilvington). Jenny Swift was chosen as reserve.

On behalf of all the hockey teams I would like to thank Miss. Alliot for the time and work she has put into our teams. Without her enthusiasm, the teams would not have achieved so much.
K. Lowe

Colours awarded to: Kathleen Lowe, Dianne Sell, Jenny Swift. Re-awarded to Jean Kilvington.

Played 13, Won 11, Lost 1, Drawn 1, Points for 42, Points against 6.

2nd XI Hockey

The second hockey team has had a very successful season, having won twelve of the thirteen matches played. A high standard of play has been maintained throughout the year despite the changes that occurred in the team. The team has been well supported by regular team members and reserves. All must be congratulated on their play and attendance at practices.

During the second half of the season the first team forward line was re-arranged and this involved the moving up of two second team members, into the first team, left wing S. Wren and right wing M. Pearson.

At the end of the season the team consisted of GK - L. Linley, RB - C. Millthorpe, LB - K. Byron, RM - M. Beaumont, CM - D. Longley, LH - S. May, RW - A. Vamplew, RI - A. Nye, CF - A. Turner, LI - C. Wood and LW - A. Deighton.

The backs remained strong and reliable throughout the season while the halves played extremely well supporting both the forwards and the defence. The forward line, however, was unsettled until the second half of the season but despite this set-back a high standard of play was reached.

Special mention must be made of the reliable reserves Pat Rhodes and Chris Stevens who played in several matches and attended the remaining matches to support their team.

The main goal scorers were : - A. Turner 26 goals and C. Wood 20 goals. Games played 13. Won 12. Lost 1. Drawn 0. Goals for 71. Goals against 13.

As well as being undefeated at 15-a-side, they also won the Ilkley Sevens and the Hipperholme Sevens.
Played 17. Won 15. Drawn 2. Lost 0. Points for 390. Points against 73.
The 1st XV have had an excellent season, being undefeated in their matches. The team soon developed into a good all round combination at the beginning of the season. The only real position with any doubt was scrum-half. However, after the Christmas vacation the position was most admirably filled by Terry Mills who adapted himself very well in a position in which he was somewhat of a stranger.

One of the highlights of the season was the defeat of Pontefract K.S. by 18 pts.-6 pts. The 1st XV was determined to avenge the defeats of the previous two seasons and certainly rose to the occasion, the pack dominating most of the set pieces and giving the three-quarters plenty of possession which they used fully to their advantage. However, we must also congratulate Pontefract on a great game.

It is very hard to single out individual members in a team that played so well together but special mention must go to Fearnside and Marston who in my opinion formed the best centre combination in the county. Fearnside an elusive and more elaborate player and Marston a straight-forward hard-tackler but also a strong runner with the ball.

In the forwards special mention should go to Poole, Fradgley, Burbeck and Osborne. Poole was undoubtedly the most experienced player in the pack and was a fine example to the less experienced players in the forwards. Fradgley was our main worker in the loose and always made his presence felt through the game. Finally Burbeck and Osborne, two members of a very successful back row, who, when the chance arose, often ran and sidestepped as well as most of the three-quarters.

This season the school entered six Sevens Tournaments. After sixteen years of endeavour the school seven won the Ilkley Sevens which has so often eluded them in the past. This was the one tournament we most wanted to win and the pinnacle of a most enjoyable and highly successful season, and our success would not have been achieved without the enthusiastic support of the 150 members or so of the school who went to Ilkley. We also won the Hipperholme Sevens and reached the semi-final in the Loughborough Sevens and Heath O.B. Sevens and the quarter finals of the Bridlington, and Llanelli Sevens.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Wilkinson, Mr. Pacy and Mr. Howdle who have given up their spare time throughout the season to coach and train the team, and I'm sure that after some of Mr. Howdle's training sessions we have learned some of the finer arts of keeping fit. I wish next year's captain and team every success and I hope they enjoy their rugby as much as we have done this season.

Ilkley Sevens Team: Fradgley, Osborne, Burbeck, Mills, Johnson, Fearnside, Marston.

Repeat Colours: Fearnside, Coop, Johnson.

New Colours: Stone, Marston, Poole, Fradgley, Osborne, Shelley, Burbeck.

2nd XV Rugby

Played 17. Won 16, Lost 1, Points for 383, Points against 57.

The strength of this year's first team has been reflected in the excellent season enjoyed by the Second XV. Despite many of the teams being called upon for 1st team duty from time to time, able replacements have been found from the reserves which emphasises the overall strength of senior rugby in the school.

The record of the team speaks for itself, the only defeat being at the hands of Pontefract by 14pts. to 11. In the remaining 16 matches, victory was never in doubt, and in more than half of these a margin of more than 20pts separated the teams.

Particular mention should be made of Moxon, Marks, and Jones amongst the forwards and of Dyson in the three-quarters, who, with 19 tries was the leading try-scorer.

Colts Rugby

Played 12, Won 7, Lost 4, Drawn 1, Points for 148, Points against 72.

The Colts began the season poorly with one win in four matches. This was due to some trials which prevented five boys from playing. After the trials were over the team began to play better, and in the lineouts and scrums our pack were indeed the victors more than once.

Around the middle of the season the team was at its peak, and in one spell won five matches on the trot with only nine points being scored against and seventy two for. The pack, with hooker Gibson, second row Sandford and Hinchcliffe, and back row of Cooke, Parker, and Atkinson playing really well, were always on top, and never Once let the threequarters down. The defence of the team was about its best quality with full lack Osborne having a good season with tackling and kicking to touch.

In the competitions, 9-a-side and 7-a-side we were unlucky to meet the winners both times on their journey to the final.

In the trials, five boys, Cooke, Gibson, Hancox, Bouskill, and Sandford reached the South Yorkshire trial with the latter two being successful in playing for S. Yorks.

I am sure the team would like to thank Mr. Knox for his help in training and improving the team's game.
Bouskill, J. Captain

Under 14 XV Rugby

Played 12, Won 8, Lost 4.

The Under 14 Rugby XV had another interesting season during which all the boys concerned improved their standard of play considerably. The team was very settled, changes only being found necessary in three positions all season. Nicholls proved to be an excellent captain and an outstanding player. Many of the boys look capable of taking representative honours next year, particularly Wainwright, Kay, Stone, Sennett and Needham as well as Nicholls. With continued enthusiasm we hope for an even more successful season next year.

We were again able to field a 'B' team, though fixtures were difficult to obtain. Many 'B' team players are contending for positions in the 'A' team which is a very happy situation for the standard of rugby in this age group.

Under 13 XV Rugby

The under 13's Rugby XV enjoyed a very successful season. Out of 16 matches played 14 were won and only 2 lost. During the season, the team amassed a total of 379 points, while only 117 were scored against them.

Praise must be given to John Basford for his excellent work as Captain of the team for most of the year, and to his contribution of 199 points to the team's aggregate for the season. Basford's excellent play throughout the season, won him a place in the school's Under 15's, seven-a-side 'A' team which competed in the Hipperholme Junior Seven-a-side Tournament.

The enthusiasm of the whole team in training, and the support of a number of very capable reserve' players who have faithfully attended practices all through the season, have been the main reason for the team's success.

Under 12 XV Rugby

Although they only played four matches this season, the Under 12 XV have shown that they are fully capable of carrying the proud tradition of Hemsworth Grammar School.

The type of rugby played by the team and by the first year as a whole, is a very good omen for the seasons to come.

They were beaten by Normanton in the first game; shared the honours with Pontefract over two games and then finished the season by trouncing Aston Woodhouse.

Boys' Hockey XI

Once again the Boys' Hockey XI has had quite a successful season, and it has certainly maintained the steady progress which it began to show during the season 1964-65. This year the fixture list was fuller than it has been in the past, but, unfortunately, inclement weather curtailed a number of matches. The results of the matches actually played were as follows: Played 10, Won 5, Lost 4, Drawn 1, Goals for 45, Goals against 18.

Support for the team was very encouraging, and next season there is every prospect of a Second XI taking the field for the first time.

Without any doubt the most notable achievement of the season was the selection of Rowley our centre-half as first reserve for the South Yorkshire Boys' Hockey XI. Continued effort by Rowley may well take him far in the game.

I should like to express my most sincere thanks to Mr. Murray and Mr. Warren for the time they devoted throughout the season towards coaching and umpiring. It is thanks to them that the importance and success of Boys' Hockey in Hemsworth Grammar School is steadily increasing.

New Colours: Kelly, J., Hall, S., Senior, A., Rowley, D.

First XI
The first eleven has had a very disappointing season to say the least. So far, only one match has been won, and that not very convincingly. The season's best performance was undoubtedly the match against Thorne Grammar School, in which the school held the upper hand throughout, although Thorne managed to bat out time, the match ending in a draw.

Poor fielding on Hemsworth's part, rather than the opposing team's overall superiority has been the reason for Hemsworth's repeated failure.
Derek Cope, L.VI.S.

Second XI
The second eleven has enjoyed slightly better fortunes than the first, having won two of their four fixtures. One of the outstanding highlights of the season was Shelley's domination of the match against Thorne. Having scored 58 out of a total of 121, he dismissed most of the opposing batsmen with a superb return of 8 wickets for 56 runs. In Hemsworth's other win, over Wath, Mills was prominent with 35 not out.
Howey, U.VI.A.

Under 14 XI
So far this season the Under 14 XI lost only one of their fixtures in a most successful season. The most memorable match was the one at Pontefract which lasted only half an hour. May and Chapman bowled the opposition out for 20 in 11 overs and Hemsworth passed this total without loss.

Girls
For the past few years the standard of athletics among the girls has increased steadily. Although, this year, the actual team has had little opportunity to show results, some success has been achieved.

The triangular match between Hemsworth, Rothwell and Normanton at Rothwell was won by Hemsworth. Points were 87, 82.5 and 56.5 respectively

Three of our representatives at the Yorkshire schools were placed in their various finals, namely, Anna Nye who came 4th in the Senior Girls 220 yds., Marrion Pearson, Yorkshire javelin champion for the second year in succession, represented the county at the National Schools this month, and Dianne Sell who won the Senior Girls' Discus.

Weather conditions have been poor, and the rain made worse the already treacherous run-ups to the long jump and high jump pits. The necessity for proper discus and shot circles cannot be over-emphasised if we hope to improve the standard of field events in the near future.

Many thanks must go to the groundsman for keeping our track in such good condition and to Miss Alliot for all the many hours she has spent in coaching and encouraging the athletics team.
Dianne Sell (Captain)

Boys
Of the three athletics matches so far the school has only won one, but there need be no cause for disappointment for this has been a very encouraging season as regards the future.

It is significant that all the matches were dominated by the juniors and intermediates winning their respective sections comfortably, while the seniors were beaten.

Indeed, the juniors, for whom Basford was outstanding, and the intermediates, whose strong trio of Lavery, Nicholls and Kaye have yet to be beaten, are very strong school teams and the promise holds good for future seasons. With such strong potential in the lower school budding surely it is about time the Athletics facilities were brought up to a standard relative to the boys' performances.

The senior team, however, was left as a rather weak side after last season, but the boys have tried hard and it is significant of their will to compete and try that in only one or two events did we have a regular first and second string. Consequently we have had to call on boys who generally do not train for athletics, but have some natural talent and who have joined in willingly. It is these boys on whom a successful season depends and to whom we are very grateful.

Perhaps this was our most successful year at the Yorkshire Sports. Lavery confirmed our claims of him and won the junior hundred yards comfortably. Kaye, too, came second in the junior boys' hurdles - a remarkable feat when it is remembered that hurdling has only just been entered in the athletics curriculum. Nicholls and Basford came second and sixth respectively in the junior boys' discus and Wrigglesworth was fourth in intermediate discus.
D. M. Fearnside (Captain)

Tennis

The success of the tennis teams this season is difficult to determine because of many cancellations.

The first team have won both of their matches so far, while the second team have conceded defeat twice. However, this may be due to the fact that while the first team remained the same, the second team has been constantly reshuffled. The changes, especially of the third couple, have been to give everyone who has regularly attended practices, a chance to play.

The junior team, having played only one game which they lost, already show great promise for the future senior teams.

Both matches already played and the well attended practices have been enjoyed by all.

Special thanks must go to the girls who gave up their time to umpire on Saturday and of course to Miss Alliot and Miss Williams.

Boys' Tennis

So far the Boys' Tennis VI has plaved only three matches. Two of these, against Dinnington, were won convincingly with each of the three pairs in the Hemsworth team defeating its opponents. Jones played an excellent game with five aces.

The third match against the Staff was won with the loss of only one set. With such a strong team the prospect of winning the oncoming three matches is very bright.

Colts XI
The Colts team has had an average season, having won three and drawn two out of seven matches played. The strength of the side has undoubtedly increased in the bowling. Smith, Osborne and Burrows have bowled consistently well throughout the season. The side's batting strength has not been comparable to the high standard set by the bowlers.
