Awards
The Championship Cup was won by Talbot with 329 points; Price came second with 317 points; Guest third with 260 points; and Holgate fourth with 195 points. The Standards Cup and the Relay Cup were both won by Price.
The Senior Victor Ludorum was won by Sale E., with 33 points. The Junior Victor Ludorum was won by Moore B., with 35 points.
The Senior Victrix Ludorum was won by M. Butterfield, with 37 points. The Junior Victrix Ludorum was won by M. Hepworth with 344 points.
The Mile Cup was won by Baker, D., and the Half-mile Cup by Wheatcroft, T.
Detailed Results
Eight records were broken at the annual sports of Hemsworth Grammar School on Wednesday, when the Guest of honour, who presented the awards, was Mrs. L. N. Collette, wife of the School's Senior Master. The champion house was Talbot, with 331 points, closely followed by Price (319), Guest (254) were third and Holgate (195), last.
The outstanding record breaker was Guest's junior girl, M. Hepworth, who, besides tying with P. Brooke (Holgate) to create a new record time of 10.2 secs. for the 80 yards, also put up the School's best ever performances in the junior 100 yards (12.5secs), junior long jump (14ft - 0.5in.) and junior high jump (4ft - 0.25in.). Three Talbot record-breakers were, Thompson (under 15 pole vault, 6ft.-10.25in.), Trueman (senior high jump, 5ft-4in.), & Jordan ( junior high jump, 4ft-2.75in.). Guest's junior relay team ran the event in 1m-31.6secs to break another record.
From the start of one race - the intermediate boys' 220 yards - it was clearly evident that the existing record of 25.8secs was safe. The six competitors, all in Price, trotted round the course and crossed the line together to clock 44.5secs. What was the reason for this?
Guest provided the junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum, Moore and M. Hepworth, respectively. The senior individual champions were Sale and M. Butterfield, belonging to Price and Guest, respectively. Wheatcroft (Holgate) won the half-mile cup and Baker (Talbot), the mile trophy.
It was also Parents Day, and exhibitions in the School included Needlework, Hygiene, Art, Chemistry, History, Woodwork and Metalwork.
