Above is Ellen Toulson photographed by Mr Reed on the Fortieth Annual Sports Day, 17th May 1961. The event was the Senior Girls' High Jump. The competitors were as follows:- C. Parton 45, E. Toulson 36, C. Gaskell 26, S. Kelsall 22, I. Thorpe 40. The result was 1) 40 - Irene Thorpe 2) 26 - Christine Gaskell 3) 36 - Ellen Toulson 4) 45 - Cynthia Parton 5) 22 - Sheila Kelsall Irene's winning height was 4ft 3ins which fell a long way short of the record of 4ft. 9 and a quarter ins. set by M. Griffiths in 1946. In the photo, Irene is on the left, Christine has her hand on her head, Ellen is flying through the air, and Cynthia and I are noticeable by our absences! We both took off from our left legs, and so would be standing off to the right of the picture.
