Sports Days 1920s

1922

The First Parents Day - July 22nd 1922

The plans were for Sports at two o'clock, then tea followed by songs and an exhibition of country dances afterwards. The weather almost spoiled this inaugural Saturday event, as the rain curtailed the sports events, and tea in the open air had to be abandoned altogether. All the tables were transferred into the classrooms at the last minute, and a large number of pupils, parents, Governors and Staff sat down together.

The evening's programme of music and folk dancing was postponed until the following Wednesday. Mr. Jenkinson was in charge of the arrangements, and several Governors acted as judges and stewards for the sports. Mr. S.G. Clift was the starter, Mr. E. Dickinson was marshal, and Miss M.A. Griffiths was recorder.

All the points gained in the events counted towards the inter-House Cup. The score after the Saturday sports was Holgate 55; Talbot 47.

The pre-downpour sports results give us for the first time the names of 42 of that first intake of pupils.

1923

The Second Annual Sports and Parents' Day - July 14th 1923

Unlike the year before, the weather did not interrupt the planned Saturday programme of sports, tea and cricket.

The Sports

Points gained by the pupils in the sports were added to those gained by work and conduct during the ordinary school routine, and at the end of the summer term would decide which of the two Houses should be awarded the "Talbot" shield. (Previous reports of this "Talbot" trophy mentioned a silver cup). In keeping with the motto of the school, "Labor Ipse Voluptas" (find pleasure in the work itself) the only 'prizes' given to the winners of the events were the points gained for the pupils' respective Houses.

The trophy had been awarded to Talbot House in the previous year, and that competition had been keen and close, as it was on this day. Each event followed on smoothly from the last - a tribute to the organisation of the school's staff. Mr. A. G. Jenkinson, the headmaster, presided over the gathering, and had very efficient officials in Mr. Sydney G. Clift, (starter), Mr. Philip Crossland (marshall), Miss M. A. Griffiths (recorder), with the remainder of the staff giving valuable support. Members of the governing body assisted with the judging.

The two Houses ran practically neck-and-neck in their competition until the closing events. Holgate won the Cricket Ball event, and Talbot levelled things immediately. Talbot took the lead in the boys' Open 100 yards sprint, but lost it immediately in the girls' Open High Jump. Holgate went ahead by gaining a first and third in the 220 yards, lost it immediately in the girls' 300 yards, regained it in the boys' open high jump, and lost it again an event later. Then the Houses were level for a couple of events, and so it went on, with the lead changing again and again, until with twenty of the twenty-one events completed, the score stood at Talbot 62, Holgate 60. It was time for the Relay event, in which both girls and boys took part. Holgate jumped off with a lead and increased it to several yards in the first few laps, but amid excited cheering a Talbot boy got ahead. The girls maintained the advantage and finally Talbot House won well, while the whole school cheered itself hoarse.

An outstanding feature of the sports was the splendid running of Smith Major, who won the open 100 yards, quarter-mile and half-mile. The first two events produced very keen finishes, but Smith ran the half-mile with great ease in brilliant style. He also helped to turn the scale in the relay, so that he did great work for Talbot House during the day.

The Cricket Match
The Parents v Boys cricket match was enjoyed by all on that July afternoon, and the fathers just managed to snatch a victory over their progenies by eight runs.

Samples of the work of the scholars were exhibited during the day, and proud parents and visitors appreciated the drawings, needlework and handwork on display in the Art room. At the close of this day, Mr. Jenkinson, his staff and the Governors would have felt a great sense of achievement on a successful and busy few days. The summer holidays beckoned!

The Cricket Match
After tea a cricket match was played between the parents and the boys. The parents were all out for 7. Mills performed the "hat-trick" and took 7 wickets for 3 runs. The boys responded with 51 for 4 wickets. The parents were sent in and made a total of 24.

One day later, on July 27th, the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games held in Paris took place. It is a possibility that some of the athletes who took part in the Hemsworth sports had been inspired by hearing of the achievements of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, who won gold medals in the 100m and 400m events. Their story was not to be told until 1981 in the film 'Chariots of Fire'.

Mrs. Alice Schorah presented the prizes, and also a large box of chocolates from the children to the headmaster.

The following were awarded school cricket colours - Barker, Mills, Hawkesworth, Glew, and Crossley.
A very large gathering sat down to tea after the presentations.
In the evening an exhibition of Fives was given by Harry Crossley, the fives captain, and Walter Parsons, versus Barker E.J. and Kirk W. A keen game was won by Crossley and Parsons.

Another attraction was the cricket match, Parents v. School.
The parents were represented by Ald. G. Price (capt.), Messrs. Brewin, Senior, Law, Wright, Kitching, Greenfield, Watson, Schorah, Benton and Barker.
The School XI was: Barker E.J. (capt.), Mills, Stanley Hawkesworth, Glew, Harry Crossley, Mart, Frank A. Rothera, Wright W.H., Kirk W., Richard Buttree and Fred Williamson.

The parents batted first and made 57 (Mr. Brewin 21 and Mr. Kitching 17). Mills took 7 wickets for 21 runs. The School easily passed this total without a wicket falling, and closed at 104.
Stanley Hawkesworth made 50, winning a bat offered by the headmaster.

Carlton Main Colliery Band played during the afternoon, and one week later, the school was quiet again, as all pupils and staff began their summer holidays.

He thanked his entire staff for their efforts in making the sports a success, which they undoubtedly had been. He also congratulated the winners upon winning, and the losers upon their efforts to win which were more creditable considering the fact that no personal prizes were to be won.

Tea was served in the dining room, admirably catered for by Mr.& Mrs. Manning, the school caretakers. An exhibition of the scholars' work was held in Needlework, Woodwork and Art, some good work being on view, especially the drawings and paintings of Emma Bate. After tea a cricket match "Parents v. Boys," was played, in which the boys proved superior, the scores being: Boys, 82 runs, Parents, 57 runs.

1927

The Sixth Sports and Parents' Day, Wednesday July 20th 1927

Although the weather was inclined to be showery, the Sixth Annual Sports and Parents' Day at the school attracted a large number of visitors. The sports were held on the school playing fields which were bordered on three sides by tall trees. The local newspaper mentioned that the scholars "should consider themselves very fortunate that the school is so well equipped in this direction". Since the last sports, a new house, "Guest" House, had been formed, and had the honour of winning the Challenge Cup, with a total of 74 points, Talbot House was second with 73, Price House was third with 72, while Holgate House were so badly off for athletes that they could only amass 8 points.

The "Victor Ludorum" Cups were won by Stanley Hawkesworth 14 points, and Jennie Hodgson 11 points.

Records were broken in the following events:
440 yards scratch (boys),
300 yards scratch (girls),
Long Jump (boys). No prizes are awarded to the successful competitors.

At the conclusion of the sports, Coun. Mrs. Dooley, J.P., distributed the awards. Holgate House seemed to have a poor representation among the competitors. The whole of the school was open for the visitors' inspection, and in the new hall an exhibition of the scholars' work in art, needlework and cookery was held. Some excellent exhibits were on view, especially in the cookery section, where a number of the articles looked very tempting. Conspicuous by its absence was the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Prize Band, which owing to unforeseen circumstances, was not able to be present. A cricket match, Parents v. Boys, was held in the evening, resulting in a win for the boys, who declared at 91 for 4, to which the parents replied with 80 all out.

1928

The Seventh Sports and Parents' Day, Wednesday July 25th 1928

Guest House won the Challenge Cup for the second year running, with a total of 89 points at the annual sports, held in fine summer weather at the school. Many records were broken, most notably the throwing of the cricket ball by Stanley Hawkesworth, which exceeded the previous record of 94ft 1in. by a distance of 7ft. The awards were distributed by Mrs. G. Price, and in a brief speech, the Headmaster thanked Mrs. Price and the competitors. Throughout the afternoon, selections were rendered by the Frickley Band, and tea was served in the school dining room.

Apart from being Victor Ludorum in 1929, Walter Wright achieved a high standard of play in his school cricket Team. The batting averages for the 1929 season reveal him at the head of the list, with an average of 38.1 runs for 19 innings. Reginald Clarke and Fred Williamson both averaged 20 for 20 innings each, with the latter heading the bowling averages with 77 wickets at a cost of 7.4 per wicket. Clifford Morgan had 30 wickets at a cost of 8 runs per wicket. Walter Wright accepted 15 catches during the season, and gained the school some recognition as a nursery for future sporting talent. Walter was the son of Mr. Alva Wright, the Clerk to the Hemsworth Urban Council.
