Sports and Parents' Day- July 23rd 1930

On the Wednesday of the annual Parents' Day, the inclement weather caused the postponement of the school Inter-House Sports. Nevertheless, a crowd of parents and friends were present to view a really fine exhibition of needlework, art, photography, woodwork, metal work, cookery and scientific apparatus. The school had placed on display the evidence of its broader educational activities not solely connected with academia.

The laboratory, with its array of chemical apparatus and many ingenious appliances invented by the students proved the greatest attraction. The needlework exhibition contained some beautiful examples of dressmaking (some of which no doubt had been modelled during the previous week's Mannequin Parade), millinery, embroidered lingerie, catchets, pochettes and hand-made flowers. A tapestry door curtain representing a cottage garden was much admired. There were some interesting specimens of photography, and the samples of cookery found a ready sale. The Headmaster announced that the sports would be held the following Saturday, weather permitting, and although there is no report of the overall results of the events, a mention that they did take place is made in a related article printed the following week about a girl athlete.

[A catchet is a design usually made up of pictures and text that has been affixed traditionally to the left side of an envelope. Handcrafted catchets are usually one-of-a-kind designs, made of nearly anything that can be incorporated on to the envelope. Sometimes designers use dried flowers and leaves as part of a catchet. Others add modelling clay or sew fabric on the cover. Handcrafted cachets are often part of handmade envelopes. A silk cachet is a full-colour design printed by the litho process on fabric, usually satin cloth. The catchet gets its name from its silky feel, yet no silk is involved in the manufacturing process. After the design is printed, each individual catchet is applied with a permanent bond to the envelope.
"Pochette" is a nineteenth century French term for a woman's "pocket" or purse.]

The Tenth Sports and Parents' Day, July 22nd 1931

The day's weather was fine, and in the 40 or so events, records were broken in the long jump and throwing the discus. In the high jump, Hedley Wright beat by one inch the record set by his brother in 1929. At the conclusion of the athletic events, a solid silver cup was presented to the school by Ald. Price on behalf of the South Elmsall Pretoria W.M. Club, who gave it in appreciation of the services rendered by Ald. Price, and in the hope that it would be used as an inter-House trophy in a competition which would include art, music, reading and domestic work. In handing the cup to Mr. Jenkinson, Ald. Price reminded the audience that the same club had two years previously presented two scholarships for children of members of the club. Mr. Jenkinson suitably acknowledged the gift.

At the conclusion of the sports, the prizes were presented by Mrs. Blackmore, a member of the Governors, and later an arts and crafts exhibition was held. A cricket match, Parents v. Boys, and a tennis match, Mothers v. Girls were also later played on the school grounds.

Hemsworth S. S. Sports - an account from the local newspaper.

"In the evening a cricket match between sides representing the School and Parents was watched by a large crowd, Ald. G. Price captaining the parents' fifteen against the regulation eleven pupils. The elders took first knock, and owing to a bright innings by Price, jun., the respectable score of 102 was made. This proved too much for the school, who were dismissed for 93. Ald. Price had a turn with the ball, and managed to secure two wickets for 15 runs, the younger Price having 3 for 10."

The Eleventh Sports and Parents' Day, July 20th 1932

Weather conditions for the annual sports and parents' day at the Hemsworth Secondary School were ideal, and a large number of parents and friends were present. The sport was of the usual high order, thanks to some splendid arrangements by the school staff, which ensured the completion of an extensive programme without hitch of any kind. A section of the pupils having previously given practical proof of their abilities in winning the sectional championships for the second successive year at Huddersfield meant that excitement was assured. There were several smart performances, with the chief interest centred in the sprints and the furlong races, in which competed the school's outstanding athletes. Expectations were realised when a stirring finish of the senior boys' 100 yards produced a fine struggle between three of the contestants, with inches only dividing them at the tape. The school record was beaten in this event, with the clock showing the fast time of 10.6 secs. The 120 yards senior boys' hurdles was also a good race, with all the competitors taking the obstacles in a dead line, and it was only on landing over the last hurdle that Croft gained a slight advantage to win. The high jump for the senior boys also produced a keen struggle between Bernard Hemstock and Ernest H. Wright, the former winning after Wright had sustained a fall in the take off.

Perhaps all those who took part in the Sports at Hemsworth had heard on the radio, or read in the newspapers about the Olympic Games which that month were being held in Los Angeles. Mildred 'Babe' Didrikson excelled there by winning a Gold Medal in the 80 metres hurdles, Gold in the Javelin and Silver in the High Jump.

Parents' Day

The Annual Sports and Parents' Day was again most popular and successful, a very large crowd of parents and friends assembling under favourable conditions. No apology is needed in referring to the general regret that Mr. Gabriel Price, the highly respected Chairman of the Governors, had, during the preceding year, passed away. Mr. Price had always thoroughly enjoyed the Sports, and was in his element in leading parents in the Cricket Match against the School Xl. To say the least, Mr. Price's absence created a gap which will not readily be filled.

The Sports were of the usual excellent standard. Many previous records were broken in some really fine performances, notable in which were K. Fairs in the Senior Girls' High Jump, with a height of 4ft. 6ins., and in the Senior Boys' High Jump by Heath and Croft who each cleared 5ft. 1½ins. J. Wardle and. G. Redfern tied, at 4ft. 1½ins. in breaking the Junior Girls' High Jump record. There was a great struggle for the House supremacy, Price House after a big effort, being three points below the total of 68 points obtained by Talbot. Holgate being third, with 60 points, and Guest House fourth with 24 points. Croft, Price House, secured the Senior Boys'  Victor Ludorum Cup and Medallion, Armitage being Junior Boy Victor Ludorum, and K. Fairs and D. Green champions in the Girls' Senior and Junior sections. The most popular success of the day was recorded by Denham in the mile. He ran a wondefully judged race, and finished like a veteran in holding off the challenge of Brown, who made a great effort to overhaul the smaller boy. At the conclusion of the Sports, Mrs. S.E. Guest, of Ackworth, graciously presented the various prizes. Following an excellent tea provided by Mrs. Manning, members of the School gave an exhibition of dancing in front of the School, and then the Cricket Match took place, which ended in an easy win for the School, Wade in his usual carefree style reaching his half-century. The tennis match, Mothers v Girls was much enjoyed and resulted in a win for the Mothers.

Thanks are due to the Headmaster, Mr. Jenkinson, and the whole of the School Staff for their efforts, and the arrangements for the success of the School Sports, which were voted by the Spectators as the best ever held in connection with the School.

Croft, K (Price House)
